Grim reading on why the global energy crisis is far worse than it looks in the futures markets: - The world has already lost 550m barrels of Gulf crude (2% of global output); every month Hormuz is closed erases 7m tons of LNG (also 2% of supply) - Seaborne stocks of crude are being depleted fast. Short of raw materials, Asian refiners have cut throughput by 3m bpd; that could accelerate to 5m bpd next month - Refined-fuel prices are already sky-high: In Asian spot markets petrol is almost $120 a barrel, diesel is $175 and jet fuel is $200, up from $80, $93 and $94 before the war - European refiners will probably need to cut production soon as well, because high oil prices have pushed their margins into the red. European reserves of jet fuel could hit zero by June - And all of this is before demand jumps over the summer, as Americans get in their cars for road trips and Europe restocks on gas before the winter economist.com/finance-and-ec…

Saudi Arabia and the UAE can export roughly two-thirds of their prewar oil output via pipelines bypassing the Strait of Hormuz — and offset lower volumes by higher oil prices. “The Saudis have been the economic winners of this, if there is a winner. Many of the Gulf states are now dependent on Saudi for transporting goods through their borders,” said Dania Thafer, Qatar-based director of the Gulf International Forum think tank. “Qatar and Kuwait are locked in the Strait of Hormuz. Vandaag vinden de verkiezingen in Hongarije plaats. Met Victor Orban telt dat mooie land aan de Donau de langstzittende premier van Europa. Visegrad is dood Van mijn initiële sympathie voor hem - ik was staatssecretaris van asiel en migratie toen de collectieve Europese ‘wir schaffen das’ ‘refugees welcome!’ zinsverbijstering plaats vond en Orban fors en terecht ‘Neen!’ zei - blijft niets over, van het stoere Visegrad-collectief (Polen, Hongarije, Slowakije, Tsjechië) van die dagen al even weinig. Moskou Orban’s geheul met de oligarchenkleptocratie in Moskou is niet om aan te zien. Zijn blokkeren van alle steun aan Oekraïne is van een ongeziene wreedheid en zijn constante gespuw op de EU - maar wel lekker het handje wijd open blijven sperren voor de vele miljarden euro aan landbouw- en cohesiesteun o.a. voor zijn eigen clubje oligarchen - van een ongekende hypocrisie. Orban en zijn kornuiten zijn de beste illustratie van de zegswijze dat macht corrumpeert en absolute macht absoluut corrumpeert. Kiss of death? Toch vond de Amerikaanse vicepresident JD Vance het nodig om Orban zijn steun te gaan verlenen. De nummer 2 van de States gaat in Boedapest aan de Hongaren zeggen dat ze op de Europese Moskou-troetel moeten stemmen, laat dat even inzinken. Of het veel zoden aan de dijk brengt, weten we gauw. Mijn inschatting is dat expliciete MAGA-steun tijdens verkiezingen eerder lood dan goud is. Kijk maar naar wat er bij de verkiezingen in Canada gebeurde. Kijk naar de mislukte oproep van Musk om voor de AfD in Duitsland te stemmen. Van een electorale MAGA-knuffel ga je beter hard lopen. Patriots De Amerikaanse machthebbers lieten in hun nationale veiligheidsstrategie al in hun echte Europese agenda kijken. ‘Europese patriotten’ moeten gesteund worden, staat er. De link naar de extreemrechtse ‘Patriots’-fractie in het Europees Parlement is snel gelegd. Vance’s bezoek ontneemt de laatste twijfels. Grand Hotel Weg Kwijt Mijn frustratie over het wederzijds transatlantische onbegrip is groot. Omdat ik koppig blijf geloven dat we sterker staan als we samen staan, stel ik me kwetsbaar op. De anti-Trump emoties bereiken ongekende hoogtes. Progressieve intellectuelen kirren luidop van plezier wanneer het Iraanse regime (voorlopig nog) niet omver geworpen wordt. Een religieus gruwelregime dat haar eigen mensen massaal uitmoordt, Internationaal terrorisme niet alleen steunt maar zelf creëert en Rusland duizenden shaheds bezorgde is ‘een vreedzaam dictatuurtje’ dixit Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer, want het regime in de VS is erger. Grand Hotel Weg Kwijt. Rede En zo zijn we terechtgekomen in een wereld waarbij de nieuwe collectieve Europese zinsverbijstering luidt dat de Trump administratie erger is dan de ayatollahs en mullahs van Teheran. Hoe we hier uit deze situatie van wederzijds onbegrip en woede moeten geraken zie ik even niet, maar ik geloof sterk in de rede. Laten we hopen dat deze snel wederkeert.
