Monochrome Monday... 1. Look for contrast, not color: In black-and-white photography, strong light and dark areas create the impact. Seek out scenes with deep shadows, bright highlights, and interesting tonal separation. 2. Focus on shapes, lines, and textures: Without color to grab attention, composition becomes even more important. Patterns, leading lines, wrinkles, reflections, and textures often make the strongest monochrome images. 3. Use light to tell the story: Side lighting, early morning light, or dramatic shadows can add depth and emotion. Before pressing the shutter, ask yourself: Would this photo still be interesting if all the color disappeared?

Most photographers are looking for a breakthrough. A new technique. A better location. A piece of gear they've had their eye on. But sometimes the biggest difference comes from one small change. Taking a few extra seconds before pressing the shutter. Moving a step to the left. Waiting for someone to enter the frame. Shooting one moment later. Photography is full of small decisions that nobody notices individually—but together, they can completely transform an image. The next time you're about to take a photo, pause for a moment. Then make one small change. See what happens.

Why this portrait works . Community Spotlight: "Larissa" by @lauracallsen . This portrait works because of its strong use of diagonal composition. Instead of placing the subject in a static, centered pose, the photographer creates movement through the angled arms, the sloping edge of the fabric, and the subject's gaze. Your eye naturally follows these diagonal lines straight to the face, making the connection feel immediate and intimate. viewbug.com/member/lauraca…

Listen up! I've been taking photos for 40 years. If you're just starting out, here's one piece of advice: Take more photos. Not more gear. Not more courses. Not more presets. More photos. viewbug.com
