How risky is it to own a pit bull?
I'm not talking fatalities, but bites, because bites are still a bad outcome and any dog who bites should be put down.
If we take the annual risk a dog bites its owner, scale it for pit bulls and Golden Retrievers, and extrapolate 30 years...

Reading a study that says "rich families use 30 million more words around their children than poor families" and taking from it the actionable advice "try to use 30 million more words around your children" is exactly why you cannot listen to rationalists about anything.

one of the best gifts you can give your child is one of the simplest, and completely free (in terms of money) the "30 Million Word Gap" study is one of the most cited pieces of research in early childhood education researchers followed 42 families for 2.5 years, recording every word. by age 3, children in professional families had heard 45 million words. kids in poverty: 13 million the ramifications are long-lasting. even at ages 9-10, the kids exposed to more words had stronger language skills, vocabulary, and reading comprehension there is also a socioeconomic disparity here. the good news is, this may be solvable by simple talking more! the bad news is, it may be harder than it sounds. perhaps the disparity exists in the first place because low-SES parents focus more on making ends meet than talking to their kids so to summarize — you should be talk-maxxing as much as you can! narrate your day, respond to their babbling, read to them. talking is all you need

On Friday, the governor of Ohio signed Avery's Law.
This law cracks down on dangerous dogs and makes it more expensive to own them.
The law has made pit bull advocates upset. But you know who's more upset? The kid the law was named for, who was mutilated by two pit bulls.

Pit bulls were bred to be violent and to lash out randomly. And they do. They bite random innocents for no reason, kill dozens of children and elderly people annually, and they do not deserve to live.

The Pit Bull thing is great because it is much the same as most if our problems: eminently solvable, the solution has no real downsides, and the only reason we don’t press the “solve everything easily switch” is a lack of will
Pit bulls are irrationally violent by nature, and as such impossible to trust. They always could and often do just fly off the handle, and wreak immense havoc and carnage as they do so. They account for the vast majority of dog attacks. They have no positives: unlike German Shepherds and other potentially violent dogs, they aren’t stable enough to really be trained into being reliable pets. They’re just loose cannons
There’s no reason to keep them around. The obvious solution is to just euthanize them and ban the breeds, along with its cousins (the XL Bully, for example). Problem solved. No downsides
But we don’t do that. We lack the will. So instead one always has to keep one’s head on a swivel when put in public, as there are almost always pit bull owners with poorly behaved dogs on a string leash, and that tho g could turn into a missile and maul anyone around at the drop of a hat
