WFEO was represented by the co-authors of the WFEO contribution Lylian Coelho (Committee on Water) and Dawn Bonfield Mbe (Committee on Women in Engineering), alongside WFEO Executive Director, Dr. Moez Chakchouk. During the session, Ms Coelho delivered an intervention highlighting key opportunities and good practices to advance gender equality in the water sector. The World Federation of Engineering Organizations (@wfeo) was represented by its Executive Director, Dr. Moez Chakchouk, at the UNESCO side event entitled “Leveraging the Science Decade: Opportunities for Partnerships and Collective Action,” taking place today, Thursday, 19 March 2026, at @UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. The International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development 2024–2033 (IDSSD), proclaimed by the @UN General Assembly and led by UNESCO, aims to strengthen the role of science and scientific cooperation in addressing global sustainable development challenges. As a member of the Executive Committee of the Decade, WFEO contributes to its strategic direction and implementation. The session focused on strengthening scientific cooperation and partnerships to address global water and climate challenges. On behalf of WFEO, Dr. Chakchouk reaffirmed the Federation’s commitment to advancing engineering through collaboration and knowledge sharing. He also highlighted the importance of engaging young engineers and their contribution to addressing global challenges, including through initiatives such as the #WFEOHackathon. Yesterday we marked International Women’s Day by recognising the progress women have made across the engineering profession and the impact they continue to have across the industry. Over the past century, women have moved from being largely excluded from engineering education and professional institutions to becoming leaders in fields ranging from civil and mechanical engineering to digital technology, energy and infrastructure. Greater access to education, industry initiatives and continued advocacy for diversity have helped open pathways and strengthen representation across the profession. Today, women engineers are helping to shape solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges, from sustainable infrastructure to climate resilience and technological advancement.
