This display commemorates those employees who fought in the Great War 1914-18, some of who may not have returned. It is on display in the old engine house which was the original front entrance of the site. Lest we forget.

Without doubt the strangest item found is a set of dentures! These belonged to a worker called H. Carter. Stokers had the arduous job of shovelling coal into the boilers. We know that by 1893 Carter was earning 1 pound and 12 shillings a week - £131.28 in today’s money.

Clay Pipes such as these were mass-produced and usually smoked only once and then thrown away. It is therefore not surprising that both fragmented and complete pipes were found during our 2006 restoration work.
