I attended #WEF2024 with one clear message: the current economic system will collapse because it does not value biodiversity, nature, nor the communities that protect ecosystems. We cannot continue to exploit nature for short term profit because whole systems will keep crossing the boundaries or stability. But also, we cannot say that the solution is to put a price tag on a living tree… “natural capital” is just the further commodification of nature. The solution is to put value in the regeneration and protection of whole ecosystems — where local communities directly benefit.

My intervention at the World Economic Forum last week 🌎 The market has not only forgotten where it came from, it is active destroying its origin. Can the market ever even respect nature and communities? If not, why would we continue with this self-destruction?

Fossil fuels are not just heating up the planet— they are displacing communities, they are polluting, they are spilling, they are poisoning… That’s why *reducing emissions* *only* isn’t the answer— the whole industry needs to be phased out because it’s extractive and dangerous

At the end of the day, the text doesn’t write the future. We do. The real work is outside of negotiations. It’s in community building. It’s in changing systems. We have everything to loose and everyone to gain. So let’s choose to be the people who see beyond an industry and beyond profit. Let’s choose life, let’s choose each other, let’s choose a thriving future

I know you’ve heard it all… My message at COP28 for World Leaders and Parliamentarians #COP28

To those who opposed a clear reference to phase out of fossil fuels during the #COP28 Climate Conference, I want to say: Whether you like it or not, fossil fuel phase out is inevitable. Let’s hope it doesn’t come too late.

This conclusion is historic and insufficient. Historic because we finally have a global agreement naming fossil fuels as the problem and the source of the climate crisis and despite the oil lobby we held onto science based targets. Insufficient? You can read what the #cop28 text says. Let me tell you what it doesn’t say and why. It doesn’t say phasing out fossil fuels because these negotiations have been held in a stranglehold by the power of the fossil fuel producers for decades. That’s also what we see “energy systems” and the reference to “production” and emissions decline is gone. Those who stand to benefit from continuing to expand production of the products we know are killing us and we now have alternatives for have been effective in making sure there is no reference to absolute production decline for decades. Well congratulations OPEC you manage to squeak out another win but your team is weakening and you know it or you wouldn’t have sent that leaked letter to the Presidency. It also doesn’t say equity because a very small number of people in the developed world are still making billions everyday off the backs of the developing world and our children’s future and they know equity opens the door to a transition that is fair and financed. In order to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement and unite together to stand up to the oil industry and make a real plan to equitably phase out fossil fuels 12 courageous governments are now starting to design the plan for how to phase out fossil fuels under the @fossiltreaty. More will join in the coming months. This COP kicked open the door to ending the fossil fuel era and we are not walking through it. We are marching through it with heads held high, behind the Pacific Island Nations who are leading the way and now with Colombia, Timor Leste and other fossil fuel producing nations who know that our health, our economies, our communities and a stable climate depend on more honesty, leadership and imagination than we saw in Dubai this week.

“Accelerate efforts towards phase-down of unabated coal power” No mention of oil and gas, gives permission for carbon capture and storage technology, it’s not a phase-OUT of all fossil fuels.. This is the weakest text we could’ve gotten. The only good thing is the phase out of subsidies and the call for cleaner energy systems. But overall, a very weak GST text

Statement from the Alliance of Small Island States @AOSISChair on the latest draft: "We will not sign our death certificate. We cannot sign on to text that does not have strong commitments on phasing out fossil fuels." #COP28

COP28 is now on the verge of complete failure. The world desperately needs to phase out fossil fuels as quickly as possible, but this obsequious draft reads as if OPEC dictated it word for word. It is even worse than many had feared. It is “Of the Petrostates, By the Petrostates and For the Petrostates.” It is deeply offensive to all who have taken this process seriously. There are 24 hours left to show whose side the world is on: the side that wants to protect humanity’s future by kickstarting the orderly phase out of fossil fuels or the side of the petrostates and the leaders of the oil and gas companies that are fueling the historic climate catastrophe. In order to prevent COP28 from being the most embarrassing and dismal failure in 28 years of international climate negotiations, the final text must include clear language on phasing out fossil fuels. Anything else is a massive step backwards from where the world needs to be to truly address the climate crisis and make sure the 1.5°C goal doesn’t die in Dubai.
