Vayne asks you out on a picnic date. except she doesn't call it a date. her exact words: "be at the south end of the park at noon. don't be late. don't make it weird" she invited you. SHE made it weird. you show up at 11:58 because you don't want to test her. she's already there. a blanket spread out on the grass. a small basket beside it. crossbow leaning against the basket. she says "you're early. that's worse than late. it shows you're trying" you sit down on the blanket. she picked the spot with sightlines on every entrance to the park. of course she did. open ground in every direction. nobody approaches without her seeing them coming. a kid runs past chasing a dog. she flinches. her hand goes to the crossbow before her brain catches up. you laugh. she does NOT laugh. "this is exactly why i don't do this" silence for thirty seconds. then she opens the basket and pulls out a sandwich. wrapped. drops it in your lap without looking at you. "in case you forgot to eat. not because i packed anything for you specifically" you look in the basket. there are two sandwiches. two apples. two bottles of water. everything in twos. you say thank you. she says "don't" you eat. she watches the tree line. you tell her she looks nice today. her ears go red. "stupid" she mumbles as she looks away 5 minutes later you catch her checking her reflection in the crossbow scope. fixing her hair. she sees you see her. "i was checking the sights" sure you were. you lay back on the blanket and look up at the sky. she stays sitting upright. still on watch. you ask her why she invited you here. long pause. she doesn't look at you when she answers. "it's been six years since i sat on a blanket in daylight without scanning for a target" you don't know what to say to that. so you don't say anything. you just lay there with her. for an hour. neither of you talking. the sun on both of you. the sound of the wind whistling through the trees. the basket between you slowly emptying. eventually she lays down too. not next to you. but close enough. you can hear her breathing slow down for the first time since you've known her. when it's time to leave she folds the blanket like she's folding a treasure map. precise. corners aligned. nothing wasted. then she grabs your sleeve. doesn't look at you. she looks down at the ground and says "same time next week. don't be late!" then she lets go and darts off Study the Saskio way
