A person may be tempted to step outside the spiritual “City of Refuge” of Torah, and make compromises in Jewish law on the basis that he is “saving a life.” While he admits the compromise is wrong, he feels it is necessary in order to draw another towards Torah and to save his life, spiritually. The law teaches that one does not leave the City of Refuge, for the “city” of Torah is the very life of a Jew, from which he cannot leave. People fled here in order to serve G-d as they saw fit, without persecution and hindrance. They arrived with the trust and faith that G-d would guide them, and they relied on him completely. This goes to show that the country was built on faith in a G-d who is not somewhere in the "Seventh Heaven," a faith that has no effect on daily life, and the way that children are brought up. Rather, their faith permeated their daily lives and activities, and this was reflected in the education of their children. *** When it comes to education, it is not something that happens on its own -- we must educate the youth. While a child is still young he is already taught about simple things -- certainly then, he must be taught about "the foundation of all,” and pillar of all knowledge: To know that G-d is the primary existence, and from his true existence, everything else comes into being." B”H THIS WEEK’S TORAH PORTION IS PARSHAT PINCHAS. *** FROM THE TEACHINGS OF THE LUBAVITCHER REBBE, RABBI MENACHEM MENDEL SCHNEERSON: [G-d instructed Moses to tell the Jewish people,] “My offering…you shall take care to offer to Me at its appointed time.” (Pinchas 28:2) G-d had responded to Moses’ request for a successor by telling him to appoint Joshua for this position. G-d’s subsequent instructions regarding the daily and holiday communal sacrifices were a further response to Moses’ request. This is because the need for a physical, human leader is part of our need to recognize that our lives—and indeed, the world in general—are not undirected and purposeless. After providing a human leader, G-d ensured that the people always recognize that they are subject to G-d—that G-d runs the world and that all aspects of life occur through Divine providence. G-d accomplished this by instituting the daily and holiday communal sacrifices, which served to remind us that G-d is constantly present in our lives. Our daily and holiday prayers correspond to the daily and holiday sacrifices, and substitute for them in their absence. Their purpose is to enhance our awareness and recognition that the world is not subject merely to the laws of nature, but that there is a G-d in the world, directing it toward its goal and giving it purpose. B"H The Three Weeks is an annual mourning period that falls out in the summer. This is when we mourn the destruction of the Holy Temple and our launch into a still-ongoing exile. The period begins on the 17th of Tammuz (7/2/2026) a fast day that marks the day when the walls of Jerusalem were breached by the Romans in 69 CE. It reaches its climax and concludes with the fast of the 9th of Av, the date when both Holy Temples were set aflame. *** FROM THE TEACHINGS OF THE LUBAVITCHER REBBE, RABBI MENACHEM MENDEL SCHNEERSON: The prophets declare that the fast days “will be transformed into days of rejoicing and happiness, becoming festivals.” Indeed, their festive nature will surpass that of the other holidays. Since this happiness will come through a process of transformation, it will have a superior quality, “as the transformation of darkness into light.” This implies that the inner nature of the fasts is positive. This is particularly apparent in regard to the 17th of Tammuz for 17 is the numerical equivalent of the word Tov, meaning “good.” May this lead to the redemption of the entire people. Similarly, it is connected with the present Torah portion, Parshas Pinchas. Pinchas is identified with Eliyahu, the prophet, who will announce the Messianic redemption. B"H THE 12TH - 13TH DAY OF TAMMUZ - FESTIVAL OF LIBERATION *** Following the arrest of the previous Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn, in 1927, R’ Aharon Charitonov of Nikolayev composed a nigun (melody), conveying the firm belief in the forthcoming redemption. The movements of the nigun express the uncompromising stance of the previous Rebbe for all matters of Judaism, and the literal self-sacrifice he had for disseminating Torah in complete defiance of the Russian Communist regime. The previous Rebbe’s undaunting stance against the regime led to his arrest by the Soviet secret police agency. Upon the previous Rebbe’s release, the nigun was named “The Yud Beis - Yud Gimmel Tammuz nigun." *** On the 12th day of Tammuz in 1927, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn (1880-1950) was liberated from exile to the Soviet gulag. Twenty-seven days earlier, the Rebbe had been arrested by agents of the GPU and the Yevsektzia for his activities to preserve Judaism throughout the soviet empire and he was sentenced to death, G-d forbid. International pressure forced the soviets to commute the sentence to exile, and subsequently to release the Rebbe completely. The actual release took place on the 13th of Tammuz. B"H On the 12th of Tammuz in 1927, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneerson was officially granted release from his sentence of exile to Kastroma in the interior of Russia. He was released on the 13th of Tammuz. *** Living in a democratic country, it will be hard to realize the courage and heroism it required to observe the laws of the Torah in Soviet Russia. To the Bolsheviks this meant "opposition to the Revolution," and all opposition was stamped out with cruel death. Time after time the Bolsheviks threw the sixth Lubavitcher Rabbi, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneerson, into prison. Each time he was arrested, he said goodbye to his devoted wife and children, for he did not know if he would ever see them again. He could have saved himself just by promising to stop the teaching and spreading of the Torah, but this he steadfastly refused to do. More than once they threatened to kill him, but he faced his tormentors unafraid. On one occasion one of the agents pointed a gun at him, saying: “This little toy has made many a man change his mind.” The Rebbe calmly replied: "This toy may frighten one who has many gods and one (this) world; but I have but one G‑d and two worlds, so if you take this one away from me, I still have the next, which is the eternal one. My life is granted me for the purpose of teaching the Torah to my fellow-Jews, and if I cannot do that, then my life is worthless to me." After they imprisoned him in one dreadful place after another, his health began to be affected. Still he would not give in. Finally, the fateful day came when his life was in the balance. But through the efforts of the most influential foreign diplomats, the Bolsheviks (or Soviets) released the Lubavitcher Rebbe and he was allowed to leave the country in 1927.
