I saw someone with frostbitten toes in the ER recently. He had slept in a stairwell when temperatures were under -30C.
He in fact did have a home, but didn’t have the money he needed to get there.
Lack of housing. Poverty.
Canadian society should be warmer than this.

In one of the world’s richest countries, hundreds of thousands of people are without housing. Housing First means saving lives by keeping people in housing ($3,500/month) vs in hospital ($30,000/month). But in Canadian winter, the policy focus seems to be removing tents when people are at risk of losing fingers/toes. Housing for All is a matter of social justice and sound economics.
