omg so someone just adapted cursor-party and added (among other features) teeny eyes to the cursors that point to where you're going it is... surprisingly connecting? I am now convinced that all multiplayer cursors need teeny eyes 🥹 ellesho.me/page/

📣✨ Introducing Latticework, new work with @MatthewWSiu. 🕸️✍️ It aims to help with making sense of messy piles of unstructured documents. The key idea is unifying annotation (direct reaction in context) w/ freeform text-editing (for fluid sensemaking). matthewsiu.com/Latticework

💫DID YOU KNOW💫 that if you move a mouse cursor fast enough, you can get persistence of vision and, say... *run a game of Pong inside your mouse's firmware* 🕹️🕹️🕹️🕹️🕹️🕹️🕹️🕹️🕹️

I propose that we must invert the Primer's structure: to build enabling environments which help us engage in projects and interests we find meaningful, woven into the world around us, where the things we care about are happening.

Many recent AI tools for text (#CHI2024👀) share a design trend: The page UI has been split into text snippets, cards, prompt boxes, etc.! ✂️My essay at #DIS2024 explores this fragmentation as "Collage" - to analyse & inform AI tool design. 📝 Preprint: arxiv.org/abs/2405.17217

There's a related but slightly different design question that is "should this thing be a setting?". A lot of tools-for-thought thinkers will tell you that the answer is "yes": Software tools should be so flexible that each user can shape it to their exact needs. This idea is well-intended but it only works for single-player tools (@obsdmd is a great example). Multi-player tools need to be more opinionated, because if everyone is able to invent their own workflow, you'll end up with chaos¹. In a sense, designing multi-player tools is a bit like designing a state. You want freedom, but not anarchy. Even if you live in a free country, there are rules for questions like "which side of the road can I drive on?". Opinionated, not a setting. — ¹ Recently heard a fun story about a large neobank that spent more than a year and +€1M on Jira consultants just to consolidate issue workflow states across their different teams 🫠

My new talk, "How Might We Learn?", is now available as an skimmable / scannable hybrid video-script-image confection. If you prefer to read, or if you (like me) tend to lose track of links to long YouTube videos, this is for you! andymatuschak.org/hmwl/index.html

NEW ESSAY: The Sound of Software We may be known for the rich visuals in our @notboring apps, but I’ve had a surprising number of people tell me that it’s the sound design that makes it for them. In most digital mediums like video games and film, sound is half the experience. And yet in software, we mostly ignore it. I’ve come to appreciate that the reason sound is so maligned is not because sound doesn’t belong in daily software or is inherently bad. It’s just badly designed. This essay is a collaboration with !Boring Composer/Sound Designer Thomas Williams/@thomas_sound. There are guides, videos, & downloadable assets that reveal how we design sound to create more soulful software and lay out the steps for others to get started. You'll want to throw the headphones on for this one… 🔗Link in thread

I did a talk last weekend at @causalislands LA. There's no recording, so I'll try and do a small tweet thread version instead with just fewer slides. I'd love to do a revised version of this talk again in the future if anyone has ideas... 1/n
