Common Fungal Skin Infections – Explained Simply
→ Tinea corporis (Ringworm)
Circular, itchy, scaly plaques with raised active borders and central clearing, commonly affecting exposed areas of the body.
→ Tinea cruris (Jock itch)
Erythematous, itchy lesions in the groin region that typically spare the scrotum, helping differentiate it from candidiasis.
→ Tinea manuum
Fungal infection of the hands, often presenting with dry scaling and fissuring, commonly associated with “one hand–two feet syndrome.”
→ Tinea pedis (Athlete’s foot)
Interdigital scaling, maceration, and fissures of the feet; the most common dermatophyte infection worldwide.
→ Tinea capitis
Scalp infection seen mainly in children, presenting as scaly patches, hair loss, black dots, or inflammatory kerion.
→ Onychomycosis (Tinea unguium)
Fungal nail infection causing discoloration, thickening, brittleness, and subungual debris.
→ Pityriasis versicolor
Superficial yeast infection causing hypo- or hyper-pigmented, fine scaly patches, commonly on the chest and back.
→ Candidiasis (cutaneous)
Bright red, moist plaques with satellite pustules, commonly affecting skin folds and areas with moisture.
→ Candidal intertrigo
Inflammation and maceration in opposing skin folds due to Candida overgrowth, common in diabetics and obese individuals.
→ Sporotrichosis (lymphocutaneous spread)
Subcutaneous fungal infection characterized by nodular lesions spreading along lymphatic channels, classically seen after thorn injuries.
