Redford accepted the role on the condition that the character of John Gage be rewritten to be less of a villain and more sympathetic. Redford famously turned down the offered $4 million salary in favour of gross profit participation. This proved to be a highly lucrative decision, as the film went on to gross approximately $266.6 million worldwide.
