Watched “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” A lonely hero. A lonely Spidey. A lonely Peter Parker. It felt fresh, and I really enjoyed it. Until now, Spider-Man films have generally been grouped into self-contained trilogies. With each new iteration, the cast and creative team changed, allowing the franchise to reinvent itself for a new era. This time, however, while both the cast and the story continue from the previous film, everything has been reset. The film focuses on Peter, once again alone, and the loneliness and inner conflict that come with that. It can be seen both as the beginning of a new series and as a direct continuation of the last one. A very clever structure. In the age of social media and its immense power to amplify every opinion, striking the right balance between what filmmakers want to create and what audiences expect has become incredibly difficult. Genuine, heartfelt filmmaking is becoming increasingly challenging. Because of that, this is a film that puts the “Brand” in “Brand New Day” to the test, as part of a blockbuster franchise that simply cannot afford to fail. 🕷️

UPDATE ON THE DOMESTIC SITUATION IN (NORTHERN) MOROCCO Over a day after the chaos of yesterday 1. Media and social media is full of stories of people returning from Ceuta on how bad the situation was. “No food, no water, nothing”, “the smell of corpses at the border” and warnings to not come to Ceuta ever again 2. A lot of damage to infrastructure and public transport. Yesterday thousands of people stormed into train stations and bus stations trying to reach the northern border. I’ve seen images of broken windows, doors etc in these trains and busses. And from what I’ve heard from people I spoke to in Morocco, public transport still isnt functioning as usual 3. Many youngsters are straying on the streets. They travelled for hours on all ways possible trying to reach the border (eg: Tanger is 75 km away, others came from further south) and now they’re left without money or anything to travel back home 4. Riot police is still present at some key points. Moroccan authorities cracked down at the border areas at Ceuta and Melilla, leading to riots erupting 5. Restaurants and other services are returning to normal. Yesterday even employees of restaurants along the northern coast ran to the border when stories went viral on social media of people successfully crossing 6. Generally a feeling of great embarrassment over what happened 7.
