(9/10) Meanwhile, 13 American servicemembers have lost their lives and hundreds more have been wounded. The Iranian people are still under the fist of a highly repressive regime. Iran and Russia are getting an oil bonanza. America is more isolated than ever from our closest allies and partners. And billions more U.S. taxpayer dollars are being spent on another war in the Middle East (with an additional $200 billion requested from the Pentagon to fund this war). Not to mention the failure to make the case to the American people for why this was necessary, in their interest, or worth risking American lives for.

Recent reporting suggests the Trump administration misjudged Iran's response to their attacks. But if Tehran showed restraint last year and it was followed by more pressure and strikes, they may have drawn the opposite lesson: restraint invites escalation. Before the war, I warned they might respond very differently this time.

President Trump told CBS today the war with Iran could be over soon. As I told @davidgura at @business last week, two forces will ultimately shape how and when this ends: markets and munitions. Watch the oil, stock, and bond markets. And watch our supply of missiles (offensive and interceptors) and that of our regional partners. Expect a declaration of “victory” that trades one ayatollah for another.

Thanks to @SquawkCNBC for the conversation this morning. Stopping Iran from getting a nuclear weapon is a core U.S. priority, and serious diplomacy is the best path to get there. We also need clarity on how the Pentagon uses AI, including in partnerships with companies like Anthropic. The Defense Department should be upfront with the public: Are you building systems that could enable mass surveillance of Americans? Or that take humans out of the loop in autonomous weapons?
