This is what it’s all about. Defying all odds.
Cameron Yohe of Sacred Heart recently signed with FHSU ⚾️.

A story we ran earlier this year by Sports in Kansas.
From ATV accident to all-state kicker🏈 & all-state ⚾️ player
Four years ago, Cameron Yohe of Sacred Heart HS in Salina was in an ATV accident in September 2019 and due to complications lost the use of his left forearm and hand. “I’ve undergone seven surgeries since then to try and restore function but doctors have said there is nothing more they can do. The only thing left would be an amputation and I’ve chosen not to do that at this time.” Yohe said.
Ever since he was old enough to walk, he loved playing all sports but especially baseball and football. Being an athlete wasn’t just something Yohe did but it’s who he is at his core. When the accident happened, Yohe feared he wouldn’t be able to continue to compete or play at the same level he had before his accident or whether he’d be able to play at all. He missed his 8th grade year of football and the 2020 summer baseball season but between surgeries he worked hard to relearn to play baseball one handed, catch a football and lift weights one handed. “My freshman, sophomore and junior years of football were plagued with injuries, but I found success in kicking my junior year. I had never kicked before and ended up being pretty good at it. I had high hopes for my senior year playing running back and safety but suffered a concussion again during the first game of the season so my parents and I made the tough decision to only kick the rest of the season.” The most memorable moment of his football career came during his senior night game when he was able to convince his parents and coach to put him in for one offensive play at receiver and caught a 49 yard touchdown pass. It was something I thought I would never get to do again.” Yohe said. For his senior season, he was the top kicker in 1A and earned all-state first team honors from Sports in Kansas last week in his class. Talk about overcoming obstacles.
In baseball, batting one handed was the hardest skill to learn. “I’m proud to say I have became a top hitter averaging .386 for Sacred Heart and had .505 OBP my Junior year. I had similar success on my summer travel team as well. I also pitch and am currently working on getting bigger and stronger. With all the surgeries and football injuries I’m playing catch up in terms of strength and development but I’m committed to getting stronger.” Yohe said.
Yohe said he would be lying he didn’t have doubts or struggle with his confidence during the last four years. “It wasn’t a choice for me to give up. I was determined to see my dream of playing baseball in college a reality. My motto since the accident is “overcome”. I had it stitched into the first pair of baseball shoes I bought after the accident. I have had to Overcome the daily obstacles of learning to do things with only one hand, overcome the difficulties of learning how to throw, catch and hit a baseball one handed, overcome coaches that didn’t believe I could succeed in playing sports one handed, and overcoming my own insecurities. I still struggle from time to time but my family and friends are so supportive. It’s just not an option for me to quit or give up. Honestly, I don’t feel like I’ve done anything special. I’m just out there doing what I’ve always done- competing. I know I wouldn’t be where I’m at today with All-State honors in football and baseball without the support of my parents, a few special coaches, and not least of all God. I know with him by my side, I’m not alone on this journey. People tell me how amazing it is what I’m doing and I don’t really see it that way. I’m just out here doing what I love to do and trying my best to succeed.” Yohe said.
