This is a tabby-and-white domestic cat that was beaten so badly it suffered 11 fractures, trembling in pain and unable to sleep. When I rushed it to the animal hospital for emergency treatment, some people even sneered that a “common” tabby like this wasn’t worth saving… Seeing it curled up in the corner shaking broke my heart. The vet sighed and said the injuries were too severe, and the surgery wouldn’t be cheap. Some people said that with that kind of money, I might as well buy a purebred cat. I didn’t listen. The little one hurt so much it couldn’t eat, but it would still nudge my hand with its head. Every day after work, I ran straight to the hospital to sit with it and talk for a while. Even the nurses said it had a very strong will to live. The surgery went really well, and it made it through the hardest few days. It slowly started drinking goat’s milk, resting its tiny paw lightly on my hand—its eyes looked like they were saying thank you. Three months later, it could run! It still limps on one leg, but the way it chases sunlight is unbelievably beautiful. It became my little shadow, following me everywhere I go. ~Eliza carter
