Today we release our State of Ageing 2025 infographics. These 40 free infographics are arranged in the same themes as our State of Ageing report: financial security, demographic changes and trends of our ageing population, older people's experience in work, ageing and health, the quality of England's homes and older people's contributions to society. We welcome other organisations, researchers, and individuals using these infographics on social media or in workshops as a collaborative and interactive way of exploring the report rapidly. The Coming of Age exhibition at @ExploreWellcome will explore experiences and perceptions of ageing, from adolescence to later life, and asks how societies can adapt for us all to age better. We looking forward to this important exhibition, having helped contribute to its creation. "It is fantastic that Wellcome Collection have chosen such an important topic for their next exhibition and we were delighted to have the opportunity to help contribute to the exhibition by drawing upon our institution’s ten years of knowledge on this topic." Our new press release examines how the nation’s healthy life expectancy has continued to decline significantly since the end of the pandemic. Recently, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) published new data showing the number of years people born in the UK could expect to spend in “good” general health. The new data shows that healthy life expectancy has dropped to the lowest levels in the UK since records began 15 years ago while the gap between different local authority areas is also at record highs for males and joint record highs for women. “Getting older is part of the human condition. If we live, we age. Our later years shouldn’t be experienced as a time of misery and hardship. We therefore urge government to look at the problems that affect older people and act accordingly.” Says our Evidence Manager, Sarah Wilkinson. It’s absurd that our experience is perceived as a hindrance rather than a positive in the workplace. Yet we hear this time and again. One person told us: “I’ve seen so many jobs asking for ‘bundles of energy’… You know what they’re saying: they don’t want older people.” These kinds of everyday, ageist comments limit careers and opportunities. For example, comments like 'dinosaur', ‘fresh talent’ or ‘young blood’. Too frequently the skills, talent and experience of older people in the workplace are overlooked. Will you question ageism - and the outdated assumptions made about older people - so that we can all #AgeWithoutLimits? Over the next decade diversity in sexual orientation among older people is set to increase rapidly - based on the number of older people in their forties and fifties. The latest Census found that almost five times as many people aged 45 - 64 (294,000), identified as Lesbian, Gay Bisexual or “other” sexual orientation” (which includes pansexual and asexual for example) – (LGB+), compared to people aged 65 or over (60,000). "When I hear that the numbers of older people identifying as LGBT+ are increasing, it's exciting to think that we'll be more commonplace in future!" Says Mindy, part of the Ageing Better Experts by Experience Network. The fact that the latest census results predicts a rapid increase in diversity of sexual orientation among older people in this country is a reason to celebrate. But to meet this growth there will need to be much greater consideration of the needs of older LGBT+ people. All too often, mainstream services fail to meet the needs of older LGBT+ people.  This challenge has been met by LGBT+ people themselves through, for example, innovative LGBT+ affirmative retirement communities such as @tonichousing in London and a coproduced scheme in Manchester - but more needs to be done. By recognising and celebrating diversity in ageing, and addressing inequality, we hope to influence change so that ageing better can be a reality for everyone. "Nothing was in the flat, and nothing was in the kitchen, nothing. It was rotten. (My housing officer) asked the constructors, look, this kitchen, this is not good, do something for her. But it takes such a long time." Says Amtul, an older woman. This #RaceEqualityWeek we're spotlighting our report with @raceequality which examines the structural barriers preventing racially minoritised people like Amtul from accessing home improvement services. New Labour Market stats today show a 0.1 percentage point rise in employment rate for older workers aged 50-64 to 71.7% over the past year. There are now 11.2 million people aged 50 and over in work. This age group now forms 32.7% of the workforce, up from 32.3% a year ago and from 30% in 2015. While the employment rate gap between the 35-49 and 50-64 age groups has narrowed over the past 12 months from 14.1 percentage points to 13.4 percentage points, this gap remains higher than pre-pandemic levels. To tackle this gap, we need to see the government take a more specific and tailored approach to boosting 50+ employment. Economic inactivity, people not employed nor actively looking for work, in the 50-64 age group declined by 0.6 percentage points to 25.9%. This is because more individuals are actively seeking work, causing unemployment in this group to rise by 0.7 percentage points to 3.3%. The employment rate for 65+ workers rose from 12.2% to 13.2% - the largest year-on-year increase of any age group. This growth is likely influenced by the rise in the state pension age to 66 in recent years. Earnings for workers aged 50-64 now stand at 87.8% of those aged 35-49, a slight rise from 87.6% in November but below the 90% level seen a decade ago. Workers aged 65+ earn 51.2% of the 35-49 age group’s earnings, a notable increase from around 40% a decade ago. We need more tailored employment support for 50+ people and more age-friendly employers to stop our country wasting a huge amount of talent, skills and experience by denying older workers the chance to stay in jobs or find new ones. We know that access to safe homes is not equal across different groups. Black respondents are twice as likely as White respondents to report that their children have needed medical treatment linked to issues like damp, cold and mould in their home. We need to act now to ensure that everyone has access to safe homes. No one should be living in a home that puts their health and wellbeing at risk. Our new report with @health_equals examines the impacts of living in homes that are cold, damp and mouldy. Is your home suitable for your needs? "There are currently 12.8 million more Disabled people than there are accessible homes, leaving many people without the homes they need."
