AG Nick Brown and a bipartisan coalition have won a landmark verdict in an antitrust case against Live Nation for illegally monopolizing the live entertainment industry, driving up prices for consumers and harming performers and venues. Washington and the other plaintiffs chose to continue the trial against Live Nation even after their co-plaintiff and trial lead counsel, the U.S. Department of Justice, reached a settlement mid-trial last month without meaningfully involving the states. The Attorney General’s Office sued Renton Collections Inc. last year over the company’s failure to disclose to about 400,000 Washingtonians their right to request crucial information about their medical debt. Now, the company has agreed to settle the lawsuit and provide $1.5 million in debt relief to Washingtonians. “There’s a story behind each collection notice—like a neighbor just trying to stay healthy but caught in a downward spiral of debt. Utility companies regularly overestimate their costs to justify charging customers higher rates. Northwest Natural wants to increase rates by 19% in August for customers in SW Washington, but they’ve overestimated their costs by tens of millions of dollars. The costs of living are out of control, and the last thing Washingtonians need are unjustified hikes to their utility bills. And yet, in August, Northwest Natural Gas wants to increase gas rates by 19% for 90,000 Washingtonians in the Vancouver area. This increase is not fair, just, or reasonable, and we’re fighting back. Scammers on Meta platforms are using deceptive ads and “deepfake” technology to lure investors into high-stakes scams to defraud them of their savings. These include “pump and dump” scams, confidence scams, and fraudulent cryptocurrency schemes that try to extract as much money as possible from victims. Washington is back in court co-leading a lawsuit to defend our state’s safe and secure vote-by-mail system. On March 31, President Trump signed an unlawful executive order attempting to establish a national list of eligible voters and directing the U.S. Postal Service, an independent federal agency, to transmit mail ballots only to those on the list. Two more successful convictions from the AG’s office: Yakima County judges sentenced two men for two counts each of attempted child rape. We’ve secured an important win protecting supports for people who have experienced housing insecurity or homelessness in Washington. Following a victory at the district court level, a federal appeals court rejected the federal government’s request to impose harmful restrictions on the Continuum of Care program, the largest resource for federal homelessness assistance funding.
