@FBMH_UoM It was really good to attend the event and hear about the amazing work done by Sir John following his time at @OfficialUoM

The event, attended by Professor @AllanPacey, honoured John who went on to become an orthopaedic surgeon after his time at Manchester.
It has now been 62 years since the first successful total hip replacement and millions of lives have been transformed worldwide as a result.

It's been a while, but it never left🌦️
I recently reworked an article storying the Sheffield rain shadow project - from recognising the pattern, to the research with @EloquentScience mapping rainfall differences across the Pennines.

A long time dedicated BBC Radio 4 listener, I have switched to @BBCRadio3 first thing and now start the day listening to the best of humanity rather than the worst.

@GirardotMarc @Cryos_Int @bobmontgomerie No. No sperm have disappeared (as evidenced by no change in sperm concentration or total count). It's just they were less motile at ejaculation. Loss of motility is most likely a post-testicular effect in my view.
English

@AllanPacey @Cryos_Int @bobmontgomerie In other words, sperm is still produced in good quantity, but mature sperm disappears. I'll bet destroyed by T-cells who have entered via a broken-down blood-testis barrier.
Same capillary micro-perforation problem as with Alzheimer's or myocarditis...

We've analysed 6 years of semen quality data from men applying to be donors at @Cryos_Int - no sign of changes to sperm concentration, but an intriguing drop in sperm motility which we hypothesise might be due to covid lockdowns @bobmontgomerie doi.org/10.1093/humrep…
English

@jengleruk @Cryos_Int @bobmontgomerie We didn't have data on vaccine uptake by the donors so could not do that. Several meta-analyses now conclude little or no effect of vaccination on semen parameters (e.g. doi.org/10.1002/jmv.28…) so I still think our working hypothesis is the more likely.
English

@AllanPacey @Cryos_Int @bobmontgomerie Given that we now know that:
- LNPs in the covid mRNA jabs become widely distributed
- LNPs cross protective barriers (eg blood-testis barrier)
- transfected cells are destroyed by the immune system
...why didn't you stratify your results by covid vax status?
English

@bottomlineibd @corferesearch @Cryos_Int @bobmontgomerie We think it is unlikely as the incidence of covid infections in Denmark was low. It was more plausible to us that lifestyle changes as a result of lockdowns and working from home were more important. But we can't prove it!
English

@AllanPacey @corferesearch @Cryos_Int @bobmontgomerie Interesting read - thanks. Could it also be an effect of COVID itself on sperm?
