I was the fat kid who found power in Pokemon. Now I help others find theirs.
My journey began when I was 13 years old. I was always the chubby boy growing up.
Part of being the chubby boy is dealing with bullies. This is just a simple law: fat kids get bullied. It gets better. This continued bullying eventually led to low self-worth.
I found escape from this in Pokemon. I remember winning my first (singles) tournament during the release of X/Y. This left me with a feeling that I could become someone.
Fast forward about two years, and I tried my first official season with traveling. I went to two regionals and went x-3 at one, and first at another.
I remember getting 'Congrats!' messages on Twitter, and for the first time, it didn't matter if I was the fat kid. I was good at something. I achieved something commendable.
I qualified for Worlds in Seniors, graduated to Masters, top 8'd a regional, won all my locals, qualified AGAIN, top 8'd another regional...
...then 2017 happened...
I missed my Worlds invite by a few points.
I couldn't clutch it at NAIC, and worse, I felt like I let my mom down. She had been my biggest supporter. She already booked my flight to Worlds.
How could I go home and tell her I didn't make it? I wanted her to cancel. She insisted I go, so I did.
You see, there was a Pokemon tournament called the Anaheim Open.
This Open was a post-Worlds Regional designed for players to get a head-start on the next season.
My goal was to win it. All of the best players in the world are busy. I should be able to smoke it.
Theory does not always translate to what actually happens. Let's just say it was a humbling experience...
I showed up...and got sent to the 1-3 tables quicker than my flight there.
I felt so defeated. Am I wasting my time? My money? My energy?
No. I just knew in my heart this was my path.
"Do not give up." I'd tell myself. So that's what I did.
I became obsessed. Every detail became life or death.
I'd practice gameplans in my head. I'd do damage calcs in-between classes.
"Is it safe to Volt Switch here?"
"Nah, they can Protect. Go into the one we know can't."
(^ That was a breakthrough moment for me. Looking at the game from a risk-management perspective.)
I set goals. I will win a regional this season. I looked at myself in the mirror every day. I began working out.
I became obsessed with this one goal: winning a regional.
In 2018, I finally had my shot when I beat my good friend Stephen Mea, knocking him out of top 4
The problem was my opponent was Alberto Lara, who at the time was on an absolute tear in the post-Worlds season. He got the best of me with a swift 2-0 victory.
That was my chance, completely thrown away.
I wanted to give up, but in my heart, I knew there would be another opportunity.
I doubled down.
Memphis was right around the corner. I practiced like nobody's business. I played as much as I could. I made one key change with my team and found an amazing practice partner.
I worked harder than I ever had, and I played fearlessly. I was unstoppable. I had the aura. I had the mindset. I had the drive.
With a bit of luck, good play, and sheer will, I took down that tournament. Winning my first Masters Regional Championship.
Since then, I've won multiple tournaments, qualified for Worlds multiple times, and top-cut Worlds.
But you know what? After reaching my goal, I realized that the hunger for more never ends.
Having that realization was when I started this account.
My new story is as a community builder. My goal with VGC Corner is to make the Pokémon lifestyle sustainable. One day I will go full-throttle and have a season of dominance, but I do not think it is in my near future.
I'm on a mission to create a sustainable community, by players, for players.

@PesUniverse Thought you might want a look at this. I've created a random stat generator to help edit the master league youth and make things more varied:
