Public sector unions are bad. These unions are not negotiating against billionaires or some convenient cartoon villain. They're rent seeking and negotiating against taxpayers, and they'll shut down vital infrastructure if we don't humor their tantrum.

I am usually pro-labor but the LIRR strike is absurd they’re already the best paid agency in the country, with average total comp of over $200K, and now they’re refusing a 4% raise? This is a perfect example of why US transit is so inefficient!

@daniel_ec18 If this is what you are hearing you are listening to the wrong people. No lobbying … Di Tella simply is producing fantastic students and has done so consistently for a long time. Anybody doing Admissions in the US knows this well.

Kroger’s CEO made $17M last year while the company’s profits were $2.3B (from $150B in total revenue for a profit margin of 1.53%). If its CEO was paid $0, that would increase profits by 0.74% and the profit margin would be…(drumroll)…1.54%. Lmao.

Bearing in mind that 1-3% is calculated after millions upon millions of dollars are payed out for CEO and executive bonuses and salaries

The American educational system is a model for the world precisely because it deviates from the rote learning model. It is one reason America is such a creative powerhouse (that plus the fact that we have historically hoovered up many of the world's most intelligent and entrepreneurial people with our immigration policies, RIP). AI is the opposite of everything that has made us exceptional, and it threatens the very ability of human beings to thrive.

This is very exciting, cool news. But it underscores how difficult it will be to build 500,000 units over the next decade, which is what we'd need to do to make housing abundant and affordable in NYC. Virtually all new projects filing for 485-x are 99 units or less to avoid triggering stringent prevailing wage requirements. So how will the developers of 395 Flatbush Ave Ext. pull off building more than 1200 units? My rough understanding: 395 Flatbush Ave Ext. will be built on city-owned land (think of this as a generous land subsidy that will help pay inflated labor costs); its going to preserve and repurpose the existing Verizon building as a podium (so you don't have to dig a huge hole in the ground); and the lifting of the FAR cap will make it easier to subsidize the below-market rate units (25 percent of the total). So what happens if you have to borrow a ton of money to make an expensive land purchase, you're on the hook for foundation and excavation costs, you don't have revenue from office and retail rent, and you're building in an area with a tighter FAR cap? In a sense, this project underscores how much you'd have to reform NYC's approach to housing to hit an ambitious housing target: manhattan.institute/article/what-w…

It’s crazy that there was ever a contingent that argued against strict fare enforcement on public transit—literally everything is better for riders when you enforce fares. The system is cleaner, safer, and brings in more money to improve service.

@maxdubler And there are other real benefits such as fewer corrective maintenance requests and time spent cleaning and fixing things.

Spanberger is the stereotypical "moderate" dem and her doing this, a 10-1 map, signing voting restoration for felons into law, and backing abortion/LGBTQ protection bills shows just how much better even the most centrist dem is than the best Republican alternative.

NEW: Virginia Gov Spanberger this afternoon ordered that all state agencies leave ICE's 287(g) program. State police will no longer be empowered to detain & arrest people for ICE. Important move by the governor within weeks of coming into office: boltsmag.org/virginia-spanb…

If someone wants to be a surrogate why are you mad they wanna be a surrogate. I really don’t understand lmao “using women’s bodies and taking advantage of them so they can make money” okay if they were coerced or forced sure but do you understand how many women volunteer to be a surrogate. They have to undergo like a year of screenings and testing and legal contracts. All things they voluntarily take on. It’s not an accident. Why are you angry a woman is making the choice to use her body to give someone else a baby. If your argument is adopt instead that is entirely separate

Being anti-surrogacy is usually a good indicator to me that a leftist is a Mystical, Spiritual kind of leftist and not a materialist. The arguments against it inevitably apply to all wage labor, or dangerous wage labor, but surrogacy is Different because it’s Mystical
