In this article, David Walsh explores how Sutcliff inserted various objects from the archaeological record, such as the Silchester bronze eagle (pictured below) and Hadrian's Wall, into her narratives and in doing so encoded them with didactic messages for her readers.

Rosemary Sutcliff was one of the most successful and acclaimed authors of historical fiction in the 20th century. She is particularly well-known for her novels set in Roman Britain, including most famously 'The Eagle of the Ninth'. (Continued below)
