ADHD and instructions don’t mix. If they’re not simple, we overthink them. If they’re not short, we lose interest halfway through. If they’re not clear, we panic. That’s why some of us struggled in school and why we need to break down tasks into smaller chunks.

ADHD is spending hours helping a friend solve their problems. Then come home to a sink full of dishes, a pile of dirty laundry and a letter from your landlord asking for the rent. We try to help everyone except ourselves.

ADHD makes us avoid work because we overthink it until we’re overwhelmed. That’s why we procrastinate so much and why we seem to thrive under pressure. We hate the pressure, but without it, we can’t even start.

ADHD traits I still struggle with almost every day: 1. Starting tasks: I will do anything else to avoid it without even realizing it 2. Working memory: Walking into a room and forgetting why Im there 3. Time blindness: Somehow every task takes 3x longer than I expected 4. Emotional regulation: Any form of criticism feels like an extremely personal an attack.

I just spent 2 hours learning about the thing instead of doing the thing, and now I’m too exhausted to actually do it.

ADHD makes us procrastinate even on the things we really want to do. I’m not procrastinating because I just don’t feel like it. I’m procrastinating while screaming at myself to do it, and hating myself for not being able to.

Successful ADHDers take action. If something needs to be done, they do it before they even have a chance to overthink it. They know motivation is unreliable.
