Labour MP John McDonnell has confirmed he received 11 pages of largely redacted documents from APCO Worldwide — the PR firm paid £30,000 by Labour Together to investigate journalists reporting on £730,000 in undeclared donations to Keir Starmer's 2020 leadership campaign. APCO confirmed they had collected information on him. He still doesn't know why. Or by whom it was authorised. The operation — codenamed "Operation Cannon" — also targeted journalists from the Sunday Times, The Guardian, and others. APCO's report included references to one journalist's Jewish faith and claimed his reporting "could be seen as destabilising to the UK." Josh Simons, who commissioned APCO, was a Cabinet Office minister — in the same department that conducted the inquiry into his own conduct. He has since resigned. Starmer said he "didn't know anything." Morgan McSweeney — his chief of staff and former head of Labour Together — was aware of APCO's work. McDonnell is now calling for a full independent inquiry.
