NCAA just absolutely hell-bent on destroying the paths that are currently working well—hockey in particular—for the sake of a few other sports.
Congrats, you’ve killed one of the truest forms of development in the entire NCAA!
(Until the next Rylan Masterson sues, that is.)

As the NCAA inches closer to approving its new “5-in-5” rule, hockey doesn't want to be "collateral damage."
Hockey’s unique development pipeline means some players' eligibility windows could shrink to two or three years. The sport is pushing back.

"That story is probably never going to be told again." Spoke with 2009 Hobey Baker winner Matt Gilroy about his unique path, and how the NCAA's proposal would eliminate that for future players.

A long, long time ago, probably 20 years ago, Jack Parker told me "if it's an NHL rule, it should be an NCAA rule, we're developing players for that league." I'm a big believer in believing in what Coach Parker says.

There has been a lot of "college hockey should break off from the NCAA" talk recently. From a hockey perspective, that makes sense. But, I don't see a path to that becoming a reality. At least not in the short-term. There is an NCAA bylaw that requires schools to participate in NCAA competition if the NCAA sponsors that sport. So, at least as things currently stand, the NCAA would either have to stop sponsoring hockey, release the schools, or the schools would have to sue the NCAA to compete outside of it in men's hockey only? Those seem like significant hurdles. I have some thoughts on how this could become a reality (I'll write more on that later), but I just don't see a pathway that exists, right now, for college hockey to do this. Do all 63 college presidents/BOT care enough about their hockey programs to unanimously break off from the NCAA and face the possible repercussions from that? I have my doubts. Again, from a hockey perspective, it makes a ton of sense. I'd rather the hockey people run college hockey. But I don't think this is something that can be accomplished easily.

Starting with the 2026-27 season, Division I men's ice hockey games will use a trapezoid area marked below the end line. Goalkeepers will be allowed to play the puck below the goal line in this area of the ice, but not outside this area toward the corners of the rink. This aligns with National Hockey League rules and markings. Division III men's ice hockey will add this for the 2027-28 competition season to allow planning for this adjustment.

I don't think people realize how much the NCAA's 5-year eligibility rule will change college hockey and the levels to get to it

Here's a fun guessing game: can anyone tell me which three teams in the NCAA have put the most 4th-7th rounders into the NHL in the last 10 years?
