Extended earlier work on state takeovers to look at longer-term effects and find no evidence of benefits to student achievement, on average, up to 9 years post-takeover. Also, no variation in effects depending on the length of state involvement.

When they were left out of the legislation that spurred widespread unionization in the private sector, many government employees—most of whom worked in local governments—organized anyway. With @trounstine, Open Access @StudiesAPD: cambridge.org/core/journals/… During this era of state building and nationalization, by which people usually mean the spread of political forces from the top (federal) down (to state and local), our findings hint at the possibility that much of what we understand about national American politics actually started with politics in hundreds of local governments—and changed the course of history by spreading upward to state governments, to national effect.

Our @caldercenter research brief with @CEDR_US and @ahkatz5 on special education identification during the pandemic is now published in EEPA! We show that, after an initial dip, identification rates have now "caught up" with pre-pandemic norms: tinyurl.com/y4bea5y5

New paper now out in @aerj_journal w/ John Wang & Liz Nigro on 4 different models of state-led district turnaround in Mass., providing positive evidence for building in opportunities for local influence over decision-making. Grateful for reactions! journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.3102/00…

This is a very good (+ short) paper on the declines in student achievement that began (especially at the bottom of the achievement distribution) BEFORE the COVID pandemic: edworkingpapers.com/ai25-1197
