I read somewhere today that the brain suppresses a lot of memories, especially trauma-induced ones. And I realised that my brain is a mass of highly suppressed memories.   I have pushed so many memories down, to the deepest, darkest, gloomiest parts of my existence, that it has almost affected my ability to write. To feel. To reach.   Now, to write, I have to journey across a thousand seas, past the howling deserts, descend deep into myself, fighting the demons along the way, just to write what I truly want to say. Just to describe how I truly feel.   Today, I succeeded. I reached deep inside to write this piece. But the more I write, the more afraid I become, because I do not know what I will uncover — correction, I do know what I will uncover, but I am not ready to face it just yet. So my brain is at it again, drawing the curtain, sealing the doors, shielding me from myself, the way it always has.   But if I do not face my fears, what then does that make me? How then do I say that I have conquered? That I am no longer a slave to my past? To the version of me that never healed, only hid?   So I will pick up my pen, and I will write, until my fingers bleed, until my skin sheds, until I draw my last breath, until I overcome, and until I finally defeat what once defeated me.   Written by: @keenahkay (KKC)

I’m delighted to have returned to Pint of Science UK @pintofscience in Hull for a second year on 20 May 2025 at Calla, Whitefriargate, where I delivered my talk: “Breaking Bias and Unlocking Hidden Potential Where AI Meets African Languages.” In this session with music as a case study, I argued that AI must move beyond English if we are to celebrate and support under-represented languages, especially in musical contexts. I explained how we can identify and reduce bias in large language models, revealed methods for decoding emotional expression in Nigerian Afrobeats lyrics and other low-resource languages, and outlined why elevating these languages in technology is essential for cultural preservation. I’m extremely grateful to @pintofscience, @UniOfHull, @Flamingos90, our engaged audience, my fellow researchers, and Professor Neil Gordon for making this event such a success. It was a pleasure to share my research and to continue championing the voices and stories present in Africa’s rich linguistic heritage. Here’s to many more conversations, collaborations and breakthroughs as we work together to build fairer, more inclusive AI systems.

I wanted a sexier back when I first got consistent in the gym, and I had this one photo of a woman in a backless dress saved in my phone for the longest time as inspiration. I trained upper body 4x a week and legs 2x, I was determined.
