The real question is how did it get through all the stages to get signed off for production? 🤨 My own book has been proofed by 5 different editors from both S&S US and UK. Shouldn't at least one editor who worked on Shy Girl have clocked it? I'm confused...

I’m happy to see a publisher pull an AI-generated book. I hope it has a chilling effect on people trying to sell AI slop. If you can’t be bothered to write it, we can’t be bothered to read it. Gift link: nytimes.com/2026/03/19/boo…

Oops I said Dune is specious Orientalist nonsense again. And right on cue, a torrent of incurious film/scifi bros came tumbling in to accuse me of being too dumb to understand the books. Fellas, I'm begging you to read some actual cultural criticism. Start with Edward Said.

Louie Dobson is taking a break (FREE 🇵🇸)
@BitaBehz and I have countless friends who have been completely screwed over by agents at every possible turn, entire conversations about how the agenting process has killed their spark, their creativity, their desire to write and demolished their mental health, I still just don't get it

So if an author, a marginalised author, can get a deal on their own with a major big 5 publisher they should not commit to that deal until they've done a full querying process (which can take months) to get an agent whose sole purpose is to get them a deal they've already got?

@Louie_Dobson_ well i replied just to share any insights that might’ve clarified why this is common practice… not change your mind. you don’t have to trust an agent ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ but i have multiple agent sibs who have taken this route and are happy w their decision

@BitaBehz speaking as a marginalised author without a book deal, I just don't think I can trust an agent to have my best interests at heart if I hypothetically already had a deal and then approached them when I would've done the hard part for them and now the money is basically guaranteed

@Louie_Dobson_ speaking as a marginalized author with a book deal i can say quite confidently that having a literary agent during contract negotiation is worth that 15% and more. it’s simply better than the alternative.

@BitaBehz I don't understand why a writer can get the deal off of timing and talent do 95% of the leg work then still have to do the querying humiliation acquire a 'trust me bro' agent who may exploit them and take 15% of all future royalties for a contract negotiation that's insane to me

@Louie_Dobson_ author’s discretion… they don’t HAVE to take an offer + many authors don’t stick with one agent for their entire career. you can sign to sell your first book and then requery if it doesn’t work out long term, which is much easier to do with a deal under your belt!

Louie Dobson is taking a break (FREE 🇵🇸)
@BitaBehz but I said this already if an agent only wants you because you have an offer and doesn't really give a shit about you or your book they just want an easy deal with like no actual work so they can say they've got a deal, what protects authors there? Nothing

“the first draft doesn’t have to be perfect,” i say with tears in my eyes. “mistakes don’t matter, as long as you’ve written something,” i say, pulling my teeth out. “it’s better to write something bad than to write nothing at all,” i say, setting myself on fire

romance is seen as a lesser genre because it is for women. there’s a lot of historical context for this. yet, that means we should interface with romantic novels as complete works of art instead of writing off the entire genre as slop OR beyond critique bc it faces misogyny.

both parties here are arguing that romance possesses less literary rigor than other genres (wrong) while maintaining that the other side is being misogynistic (true). incredible stuff.
cummunism 🇵🇸@comradesanchez

I think the pervasive idea of “women read uncomplicated slop because they’re simple, pure beings” and “men read long, difficult texts like Paradise Lost because they’ve got small ding-dong complexes” is internalized misogyny.
