@hodlonaut What if I told you that the most radical political structure is to have decentralized power exercised by democratically elected representatives, and that most people really don't want to hear your loud fan noises while you suck the lifeblood out of their power grid for BRICS-BTC

February 13, 2009, someone suggested to Satoshi, "What if Bitcoin had no scarcity? Programmable supply that self-organizes always to have the right amount of money?" Satoshi's response: "That's doable, it can be programmed to follow any set of rules." He COULD have made Bitcoin inflationary; he could have made it programmable. He understood the request. Then he explains why he didn't: "I see Bitcoin as a foundation and first step. First, you need a standard, basic P2P currency to work with. Once that is established and proven out, dynamic smart money is an easy next step." Translation: Fix money first, then experiment later. This was 6 weeks after launching Bitcoin. Satoshi chose 21 million on purpose, not because he couldn't program inflation. To date, the foundation still holds.

@isabelfoxenduke "How am I, a person who doesn't know how to even read their own logs, going to be able to monitor wells fargo and jihan wu via a fully running fullnode with a requirement that I have more disk and ram than my 2003 compaq can muster?" communal bitcoiners are an absolute joke.

What’s your favorite proposal for mitigating the inevitability of an expanding UTXO set other than whining about monkey pictures that no one is currently making or trading anyway? It occurs to me that the UTXO set is likely to expand over time regardless of the potential use of metaprotocols - any fave proposals for how we can make this reality less burdensome to nodes over time? I’m all ears @SuperTestnet

funny timing — someone on HN just pointed out Gemini 2.5 Flash is cheaper than electricity for a 3090. so if BitNet actually delivers 100B on CPU without tanking quality... the cost argument for running local kinda falls apart? the thing I want to see is latency tho. 100B on CPU sounds brutal for anything real-time.

Holy shit... Microsoft open sourced an inference framework that runs a 100B parameter LLM on a single CPU. It's called BitNet. And it does what was supposed to be impossible. No GPU. No cloud. No $10K hardware setup. Just your laptop running a 100-billion parameter model at human reading speed. Here's how it works: Every other LLM stores weights in 32-bit or 16-bit floats. BitNet uses 1.58 bits. Weights are ternary just -1, 0, or +1. That's it. No floats. No expensive matrix math. Pure integer operations your CPU was already built for. The result: - 100B model runs on a single CPU at 5-7 tokens/second - 2.37x to 6.17x faster than llama.cpp on x86 - 82% lower energy consumption on x86 CPUs - 1.37x to 5.07x speedup on ARM (your MacBook) - Memory drops by 16-32x vs full-precision models The wildest part: Accuracy barely moves. BitNet b1.58 2B4T their flagship model was trained on 4 trillion tokens and benchmarks competitively against full-precision models of the same size. The quantization isn't destroying quality. It's just removing the bloat. What this actually means: - Run AI completely offline. Your data never leaves your machine - Deploy LLMs on phones, IoT devices, edge hardware - No more cloud API bills for inference - AI in regions with no reliable internet The model supports ARM and x86. Works on your MacBook, your Linux box, your Windows machine. 27.4K GitHub stars. 2.2K forks. Built by Microsoft Research. 100% Open Source. MIT License

Such a shallow take. The same concept of "there might be a better Bitcoin that comes out tomorrow, and Bitcoin goes to zero". If you think the most decentralized, hard money known to man wouldn't adapt to real threats, you're delusional. What it won't do, is implement changes before the threat is known to exist outside of theoretical circle jerks. Quantum resistance has been discussed on the mailing list since I remember ever reading it... With a whole host of bad ideas and some good ideas sprinkled in there. You will continuously be humbled by Bitcoin's resilience...
Chamath Palihapitiya@chamath

@saylor BTC would need to be quantum resistant by then

More people are running Knots than Core 30. More people are running BIP-110 than ran BIP-148. Are we there yet? No. Long way off. Why? Because very few would lose something as a result of segwit. It was just disliked for seemingly coming at the cost of a block size increase (which it also added as a compromise). With BIP-110 however droves of scammers are getting ejected from the space. They will fight tooth and nail to frustrate it and do not care how much disruption they cause in the process. This is why it made sense to act quickly two years ago and not allow the rot to set in. However failure on our side is not an option as this is the last chance to reclaim Bitcoin as money with its traditional *and necessary* hostility towards other uses cases that can only degrade its decentralization, corrupt its developers, turn its conferences and cultural events into the humiliating scam fests we spent years distancing ourselves from. Let's get moving.
