The online ramblings of nobody of any importance. Particularly interested in Portsmouth & The Great War. Reluctant adult social distancing since 1966

@bobbeech The way I look at it is, the millions of people with online stores can’t all be computer geniuses, some quite the opposite. So if they can do it…

Seventy-five years ago on the 17th, 18th and 19th May 1951 #Pompey's Fratton Park staged the Portsmouth and Southsea Searchlight Tattoo, organised under the direction of the Festival of Britain Committee. The Festival marked the centenary of the Great Exhibition of 1851 and aimed to celebrate the recovery and achievements of Britain after World War Two. Many of the Festival's exhibits and events were centred on London's South Bank (only the Festival Hall remains as a reminder), but there was also considerable focus on local events around the country. The Tattoo provided a spectacular scene of colour, pageantry and military splendour involving nearly 1,500 performers from the armed forces and civilian organisations. There were displays by the Royal Naval School of Physical Training, the Portsmouth City Fire Brigade, the Naval Boy Cadets Field Gun Teams, and enlisted boys of the Royal Army Ordance Corps (RAOC). Local sporting organisations formed a tableaux of sports, with football, cycling, archery, boxing, swimming, tennis, cricket, athletics, sailing and rugby all represented. It was, however, the military bands that really brought the house down. Bands of the Royal Marines, the Royal Artillery, the RAOC, HMS Daedalus, HMS Victory, HMS Excellent and HMS St Vincent all took part, with the massed bands provided a rousing finale under the baton of Major F Vivian Dunn (pictured), the RM Director of Music. It was, of course, Major Dunn who composed the march "Pompey Chimes", first performed by the Royal Marines Band at Fratton Park in 1949 when Pompey met Newport County in the fifth round of the FA Cup. Tickets for the Tattoo were priced at 10/- (50p) for reserved seating, 5/- or 3/6 (25p or 17.5p) for unreserved seating, 2/6 (12.5p) for the South Enclosure, and 1/6 (7.5p) for the North Terrace. The first night, a Thursday, drew a crowd of 8,000. Friday's performance attracted 12,000 despite the incessant heavy rain, and Saturday's crowd was 16,000. All profits were donated to the appeal fund for HMS Affray, the Portsmouth-based submarine that sank in the English Channel a few weeks earlier with the loss of 75 lives - her entire crew.

The fate of Harry Clout and Reuben Swann is a damning indictment of #Pompey's player pathway for youngsters. So much for Justins and Britneys - just four have been given Football League debuts during the Tornante era. portsmouth.co.uk/sport/football…

@PompeyNev Quite correct, Nev. The only thing missing was the team doing a lap of the entire stadium with Sol being carried shoulder high. Oh, and at least one player tripping on the steps while descending from the Royal Box!

I'm afraid a minor diary issue means we've had to postpone our "Eisner special" edition of Who Needs Mourinho? It should hopefully be out next week #Pompey

@bobbeech @pn_neil_allen @daniel_son79 It isn't worth it unless you're prepared to commit millions making it a cat 2 academy at least. Have a great scouting network & a development squad to transition between 18s and first team. At ROKO I'm not sure that's possible with pitch space.

@bobbeech Seventeen seems very young to have a lance corporal’s stripe. He was just a kid. I presume he’d stepped into a dead man’s shoes - a very sobering thought.
