Well, I am reminded of a similar time.
There was a period, iirc around the millennial shift, during the rise of the IDE, where devs tended to end up bouncing around between different IDEs (VS, Borland, JetBrains, Eclipse, etc, etc) much in the same way as we bounce between Cursor, Claude Code and Codex today, and I recall a similar feeling of exhaustion and fatigue. You kept investing hard in learning new productivity tools, only to have to start over every 6 months. It ends up demotivating l.
Personally, having cycled through more IDEs than I could count, I ended up taking a couple of years where I refused to use any IDE, developing exclusively in Notepad, as a counter reaction, and to clear the head. I am starting to feel how this current climate is going in a similar direction. Only that if you think spending years developing in Notepad when IDEs exist sounds crazy, that’s nothing compared to how crazy it would be to dev without AI when AI exists.
