Coach Bobby Thompson @FDwrestling : None personified "anybody, anytime, anywhere" better than Fort Dodge under your tutelage. Up or down, the Dodgers were ALWAYS down to a scrap to the end. You represented the Fort Dodge wrestlers and community with Hall of Fame integrity.

I’ve saved this clip from 2024. Maybe you’re a parent that needs to hear it now and maybe you’re a parent that needs to bookmark it for later to come back to. Either way if you have watched your child sacrifice the norms to not be of the norm and watched them fall short you can relate. For those that aren’t at this level yet- remember every match/game/point is big to them in moment and I think we minimize that thinking we are helping them when in reality we are protecting our own self from the hurt we feel when our child is hurting. Struggle and failure are life’s biggest teaching tools. They are also some of the most painful to go through, but more so to watch someone you love go through. I hope this helps some parents- now or in the future or even those parents of kids at the younger ages. Hopefully you focus on building healthy relationships with your kids over their win loss record. Hopefully you are praising them not only in their successes, but also in their failures of trying so they continue to just that- try.

One thing I’ve noticed as a coach is how much attention spans have changed. I’m not trying to blame everything on iPads and phones, but I also don’t think we can ignore it. I’ve been coaching in some for over a decade, and I’m sure coaches who’ve been around even longer would agree. It used to be easy to look out at a room and see eye contact. Kids locked in. Listening. Present. Now I see a lot more wandering eyes and dazed looks. Instructions need to be repeated. Focus comes and goes. I’ve felt it myself. There was a stretch where my phone crushed my own attention span. If it can do that to an adult, it’s hard to imagine what it’s doing to kids who’ve never known anything different. Kids aren’t lazy or dumb. They’re overstimulated. And this matters because focus is one of the most important skills an athlete can have. Wrestling exposes it fast. If you can’t stay locked in during instruction, drilling, or a match, talent won’t save you. One of the best things you can instill in a kid isn’t more matches or more privates. It’s the ability to focus. That skill carries over to everything. School. Sports. Life. Maybe I’m tweaking. But it’s a real shift I’ve seen.
