Midnight is building the universal privacy layer.

Per recent mainnet data, Midnight’s rollout has reached Phase 3 (Mohalu), activating a ZK based 'Selective Disclosure' engine that separates data possession from data validation. According to the Phase 3 technical brief, the protocol is currently operating under a "Phased De risking" model. This limits smart contract deployment to a whitelist to prevent the state space inflation and unverified exploits that historically plagued early stage L1s. On-chain mechanics reveal a dual token system: NIGHT (security) and DUST (utility). DUST is generated algorithmically by holding NIGHT, creating a resource credit model that shields transaction costs from volatile market swings. Unlike traditional privacy coins, Midnight utilizes ZK SNARKs to allow "auditor keys" essentially permitting users to prove compliance to a regulator without exposing their entire transaction history to the public ledger. The second order effect of the recent LayerZero integration suggests Midnight is positioning as a universal privacy middleware for 150+ chains, rather than a siloed sidechain. If the "Capacity Exchange" successfully scales in Q2 2026, the market may see the first production ready solution for compliant anonymity at scale. Is a 'whitelist first' rollout a necessary security guardrail for institutional trust, or does it compromise the fundamental permissionless nature of Web3? A) Necessary for long term stability.
