Congratulations to Barack Obama, our forever president, on successfully cementing his Iran policy in perpetuity. Heartfelt condolences to America for needlessly surrendering to Iran and gaining nothing. And a reminder that very bad things happen when America loses wars.

Reportedly, the US believes Iran when it says, with a straight face, that it won’t now pursue a nuclear weapons programme (the lie it’s told for four decades). US Vice-President JD Vance says, with a straight face, that every war including WW2 ended with a negotiated settlement. Are all these Trump administration staffers total imbeciles? No. They’re treating everyone else as an imbecile. They’re redefining victory and surrender to cover the fact that they’re proposing to surrender to Iran and pluck defeat from the jaws of victory. If the idea is that, once the oil price comes down and the mid- terms are behind it, the US will return to war with a bunch of reinvigorated, resupplied and pumped-up apocalypticists, I’ve got a bridge to sell you. This is how the free world dies. @realDonaldTrump
Aimen Dean@AimenDean

With all due respect, Mr. Vice President, World War II is probably the worst example you could have chosen. The whole reason World War II happened in the first place was because World War I ended with a deeply flawed post-war settlement. If anything, it is a warning about what happens when you fail to properly resolve the causes of a conflict. And when World War II did happen, how did it end? Not through negotiations. It ended with a decisive military victory. In Germany, Allied forces were literally within meters of Hitler’s bunker. In Japan, it took two nuclear bombs before the Imperial leadership finally accepted reality and surrendered unconditionally. I don’t even need to go digging through distant history or obscure corners of the world to find examples. Let’s stay in your own backyard. How did the American Civil War end? It ended with a decisive Union victory, the surrender of the Confederacy, Reconstruction, and accountability for those who had taken up arms against the Union. It did not end with everyone sitting around a table and agreeing to disagree. The lesson from history isn’t that wars should end through vague compromises that leave the underlying issues unresolved. Quite often, the lesson is the exact opposite: unresolved conflicts tend to come back, usually bigger and bloodier than before.

The Real Cost of Trump’s Emerging Deal with Iran The United States appears close to reaching an agreement with Iran. President Trump claims a deal may be signed as early as this weekend, though Iranian officials continue to push back on that timeline. Before the military campaign began on February 28th, Iran was under heavy sanctions while the Strait of Hormuz remained open. Now, the US is offering sanctions relief and access to frozen assets simply to reopen that same strait. This means America is paying a real price for a situation that already existed before the war. If the deal is finalized, Iran stands to gain immediate revenue from oil sales and access to billions in frozen funds, while keeping its enriched uranium stockpile and nuclear infrastructure largely intact. The regime will emerge financially stronger and politically emboldened. For the region, this carries serious consequences. Hezbollah in Lebanon is already benefiting from the perception of Iranian victory. Iran’s influence in Iraq is likely to grow stronger. The Sunni Arab monarchies now find themselves in a vulnerable position, with their trust in American security guarantees significantly weakened. A stronger Iran may also push Turkey to deepen its military presence in Syria, bringing Turkish forces closer to Israel’s northern border. If true, this deal would mean the United States has paid a significant price to return to a position that is actually worse than before the military campaign began.

It’s not rocket science. The Iranian regime is still in power because that’s what the Muslim Brotherhood (Turkey, Qatar, Pakistan) wants. Trump got in bed with the Muslim Brotherhood ✈️ 💰 🏨 Hence, Trump’s version of Obama’s #IranNuclearDeal.

melaniephillips.substack.com/p/trumps-civil… The main reason why Iran is still able to fire missiles and drones and keep the Strait of Hormuz hostage is not because it’s strong. It’s because America is weak. The United States refuses to do what is required to win this war decisively because it refuses to bear any military losses. So it doesn’t have the will to see this through.

The Strait of Hormuz being opened again seems to be Trump's main selling point on the Iran deal. So we're back to where we were before the war. Full circle. Why did we even go to war if our main accomplishment was already accomplished before the war.

What Trump calls the worst deal ever negotiated, and has identified for more than a decade as Exhibit A in the case against American loserdom, has now become the pattern of his own Iran policy — Obama's policy. I explain today in @tabletmag tabletmag.com/sections/news/…

Trump knew that Iran’s word meant nothing when Obama was in office. He still knows today. This turn of events indicates not that Trump changed his mind but that Trump simply felt it was more important to maintain the stock market back home than to put the Islamists out of business once and for all. Not all men are cut out for finishing what they started and Trump showed us that he loses interest quickly when money is on the line. This may not be the worst strategy — after all, he’s making sure our economic interests are primary. It’s simply a matter of understanding that when it comes to appreciating world security, even someone who talks a big game like Trump can’t always deliver on that concern. Thousands of Persians lost their lives this year waiting for help to arrive and it never did. I’m sorry for that. Maybe one day America will seat a President who will be able to deliver freedom from Islamic tyranny. Today simply isn’t that day.
Erick Erickson@EWErickson

Iran signed the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. Iran signed the Obama agreement promising to never, ever attempt to build nukes. Iran will now sign a new agreement promising the same. It will seek the acquisition of nuclear weapons because Islamic Republic cannot be trusted.

Vance is historically illiterate which explains why he is a libertarian. It is a philosophy predicated upon ignorance. Libertarians refuse to believe that evil is implacable. They are perma children who seek refuge in a fantasy world. Anti-Semitic versions of Peter Pan.
