Been at ESPN a long time - this one was an all timer. Before social media, it was as viral as a story can be. I watched it on a tape in the news room. I couldn’t stop watching his teammates.

19 years ago, a high school basketball coach put his team manager into a game for the final four minutes. The kid had never played a single minute of competitive basketball in his life. He scored 20 points. Jason McElwain was diagnosed with severe autism at age two. He didn’t speak until he was five. He couldn’t chew solid food until he was six. He wore a nappy for most of his early childhood. As a baby, he was rigid, wouldn’t make eye contact, and hid in corners away from other children. He tried out for his school basketball team every year and got cut every time. Too small. Too slight. Barely 5’6 and about 54 kilograms. But he loved the game so much that his mum called the school and asked if there was any way he could be involved. The coach created a team manager role for him. For three years, McElwain showed up to every practice and every game. He wore a shirt and tie on match days. He ran drills, handed out water, kept stats, and cheered every basket like he’d scored it himself. On 15 February 2006, the last home game of his final school year, the coach let him suit up in a proper jersey and sit on the bench. With four minutes left and a comfortable lead, the coach sent him in. His first shot missed. His second missed. Then something shifted. He hit a three-pointer. Then another. Then another. His teammates stopped shooting entirely and just kept passing him the ball. He hit six three-pointers and a two-pointer. 20 points in four minutes. The highest scorer in the game. When the final buzzer went, the entire crowd rushed the court and lifted him onto their shoulders. His mum tapped the coach on the shoulder, in tears. “This is the nicest gift you could have ever given my son.” McElwain won the ESPY Award for Best Moment in Sports that year, beating out some of the biggest names in professional sport. He’s 36 now. He works at a local supermarket, coaches basketball, has run 17 marathons including five Boston Marathons, and travels the country speaking about never giving up. When asked about that night, his coach still gets emotional. “For him to come in and seize the moment like he did was certainly more than I ever expected. I was an emotional wreck.”

Today my heart is full! Today Chris Draft took time out of his busy schedule to travel to Garner, NC and lead a group of motivated family and friends at Lowes Store #488 building White Ribbons for the The White Ribbon Project. One week after making 5 ribbons outside of the RIU Plaza Hotel in San Francisco, to now making EIGHTY ribbons today at Lowes! From cutting the Plywood to tracing out our ribbons, to cutting them out of our template, sanding them, hand sanding them again to clean them up, then painting them with three coats of white paint to make sure they are bright and beautiful, then placing the "White Ribbon Project" labels on the front and signing the backs, we worked from 11:30 AM until 7:00 PM to get these ribbons done! It meant so much to me to build these ribbons and it meant even more to have my family there helping to get the job done. Today was a total team effort from start to finish and without every member of our team who showed up today and gave their time, love, effort, and support, I can not thank you enough. It feels good to know a days work is going to make a difference in so many people's lives, and this is just the start of a much bigger mission. It feels good to use the platform that the @Panthers gave me by naming little ol' me as the Fan of the Year, for something that means so much to me and my family. It feels good to honor my mom's memory and know that we are reaching out and showing support to those who have experienced or are still experiencing the same things that my mom and our family had to experience, only they know they are not alone in their fight. So one more time. Thank you Chris, thank you Lowes 488, Thank you to my family and friends. Love you all, KEEP POUNDING!

Keynote speaker @chrisdraft inspired action on lung cancer screening, reminding us that “patients don’t know what they don’t know” and urging leaders to meet communities where they are. Follow @AmericanCancer lung screening guidelines: cancer.org/cancer/types/l…

I want to thank everybody who donated to my cause. With your help, we raised $7,184 for the Gina Hollenbeck Memorial Research Fund at Baptist Cancer Center. I’m beyond grateful for every person who supported this. It was all for my mom and I couldn’t have done it without you all.

With just over a week to go in my fundraiser for Lung cancer research and awareness I am so pleased to say we are sitting at $1395.00 in received donations! With another $40 in pledged funds that puts us at an estimated $1435.00 We are so close to hitting $1500.00!! I can not thank you all enough for your support. On January 10th I will be making the official donation to @LUNGevity so please if you planned to donate and haven't yet, let me know and I will get you the information on my venmo (or other apps if you prefer). Beyond the donations, thank you to everyone who has shared posts, connected me with others who want to help, and a big thank you to @chrisdraft who has inspired me to do so much more beyond this fundraiser; Thank you to the @Panthers organization who has helped give me a larger platform through the fan of the year program, and thank you to my amazing wife Christie for being my biggest supporter day in and day out. Looking forward to making 2026 a year where we all do our part to support the Lung Cancer community! Happy New Year!

Today started at 0630 when we left Angier for Charlotte. We spent the morning tailgating with the great people at @PANTHERFANZ Tailgating Club where @chrisdraft traveled out to present me with a #WhiteRibbon which he had everyone at the tailgate sign for me. From there we spent the morning talking about what I can do to help join him and his team in continuing to spread awareness and lift up Lung Cancer survivors and do great things for our community. Thank you so much Sheree Pintea for connecting us, I truly feel like this cause is the purpose of my being named fan of the year for the @Panthers . For 11 years I've wanted to do more to support the Lung Cancer community, and with the platform the Carolina Panthers have provided to me through the #2025FOTY honor, I feel like I can finally do something bigger and be a part of a positive change in how people view Lung Cancer. During and after the game today I met so many of my fellow fans who thanks to my ribbon being with me, felt open to share their stories. I met so many cancer survivors, family members who are helping their loved ones fight cancer, and even a gentleman in a Tampa Bay jersey who actually worked on the tech that goes into the current cancer screening machines. These meetings were not by chance. I can see the vision, and I am excited to be a voice for this community. Everything after that was gravy on top of a great day. My Dad won the 50/50 raffle to close the tailgate. The Carolina Panthers proved that we can #KeepPounding and picked up a huge win over Tampa Bay with the wildest regular season crowd I've ever been a part of, and we made it home safely after the long drive home. Also another shoutout to @PanthersOnTap as my Dad was only able to come because of their generosity in their ticket giveaway this week! I am truly blessed and to quote my guy Bryce Young, I'm Super Grateful. Now I'm home with my lovely wife and my 3 boys and life is good. Our fundraiser for @LUNGevity Foundation currently sits at $960.00 in received funds and another $200 in pledged funds bringing our projected total to $1,160.00 !!!! Thank you to everyone who has reached out and shown support.
