In 2005, the NBA arrived in Oklahoma City, as we hosted the New Orleans / Oklahoma City Hornets. That lasted two years. For a year, we went without the NBA, and then the Thunder arrived in 2008. This relationship with the NBA has changed our city forever. Many of us have borne witness to this 20-year journey. At the beginning of the current 2025-2026 NBA season, only two current players had actually played on the court during Oklahoma City’s first 2005 season - Chris Paul and LeBron James. With Chris Paul’s retirement this week, now there is only one. Of course, @CP3 is not just a casual participant in this story. Chris won Rookie of the Year with the New Orleans / Oklahoma City Hornets and during his two years here as a Hornet, Chris was a major catalyst for OKC’s love affair with the NBA. Thirteen years later, in 2019, Chris returned and led our Thunder to a surprising playoff berth. He was a key early mentor to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who would later lead us to our city’s first championship. Chris Paul’s fingerprints are all over OKC’s NBA story. Upon the announcement of his retirement from the NBA, Oklahoma City sends our gratitude to Chris Paul and wishes him all the best in this next chapter. Chris, you always have a home here in OKC.
