@katclone Depends on the U. In my dept, the grad students are all guaranteed funding by the dept., so if grants don’t come in, at least some of that falls to indirects. But also, if indirects are reduced, then we have to do less bc maybe directs pay for some of that

super genuine question(s) I’d love for someone working as admin in academia to answer — why is PhD student enrollment being cut? what are the costs per student over a ~5 year period? are these really the most costly positions at the university
