You cannot build strong democracy on an empty budget. ⚖️ CMD-Kenya moved to the High Court to challenge the continued illegal underfunding of political parties in the 2026/2027 budget. The law is clear: 0.3% of National Government Revenue must go to the Political Parties Fund. Underfunding political parties means: - Weaker institutionalization - Limited democratic mandates - Poor preparedness for the 2027 elections The High Court has certified the case as urgent and a hearing in court is slated for 9 June 2026. Advancing gender equality and strengthening women’s political participation remains central to our mission. Today, our Executive Director joined fellow leaders and partners committed to promoting women’s empowerment and inclusion, where he shared insights on practical strategies to enhance women’s participation in politics and political processes. From leadership development and civic engagement to creating inclusive political spaces, the conversation reaffirmed the importance of building a democracy where women’s voices, leadership and contributions are fully represented and valued. Sustainable development talks happen in boardrooms. But the impact lands in villages, estates, and informal settlements where grassroots youth live it daily. Too often, those voices are forgotten or invited last. At #YouthSDGsWeek2026 the message was clear: Civic education and genuine participatory processes aren’t “nice to have.” They’re the foundation. Because when youth don’t understand or have ownership of the frameworks, they can’t hold them accountable. And when institutions don’t create space for youth to co-design, trust breaks down. With the 2030 deadline for the SDGs edging closer, we have to look back to move forward. ⏳ #YouthSDGsWeek2026 provided a youth-centric space to reflect on; progress made, challenges that persist, and why youth voices matter. Themed on SDG 16: Peace, Justice & Strong Institutions, the day’s discussions asked: Are our institutions truly responsive to youth? Why? Because shaping how we define progress now is how we shape development frameworks beyond 2030.

The @GloDemCoalition is creating space for actors across the continent to come together- not just to reflect on the state of democracy, but to move forward concrete actions to reclaim it. 🌍 By convening diverse voices from youth and civil society to regional and global partners, these engagements strengthen collective efforts to address shared challenges, rebuild trust, and advance more accountable and inclusive governance systems. Reclaiming democracy requires more than dialogue; it calls for coordinated action, shared responsibility, and sustained collaboration across borders.

At CMD Kenya, we recognize that safeguarding democratic gains today requires more than national efforts- it calls for strong global cooperation and collaboration to respond to shared challenges and protect civic space. 🌍 We’re proud to join actors from across Africa and beyond at the Global Democracy Coalition Africa Regional Forum 2026, themed Reclaiming the Democratic Promise - Youth Agency, Digital Resilience, and Combating Kleptocracy in Africa. 🤝 Convening like this are critical as they create space to align strategies, share lessons across borders, and co-develop solutions that strengthen accountability, inclusion, and resilience in our democratic systems.

At a time when Africa’s democratic journey continues to evolve, it is critical for young people to come together and reflect on the progress made while shaping the path ahead. 🌏 Platforms that convene youth across the continent create space not only to take stock of democratic gains, but also to interrogate the challenges that persist, and how best to address them. 🔍 By engaging as co-creators of solutions, young people move beyond participation to actively influencing leadership and governance outcomes, ensuring that democracy is more inclusive, responsive, and reflective of the realities on the ground. 🌿
