Very few coaches understand the relationship between external excellence and internal fulfillment. Excellence and fulfillment are separate pursuits. But most coaches don't believe that, so they make the mistake of forcing them into one pursuit. "Winning will fulfill me and doing what fulfills me will lead to more winning." But that's not how it works. Excellence is external, observable, measurable, competitive, and usually comparative. Fulfillment is internal, felt, personal, intrinsic, non-comparative. Forcing them into one shared pursuit always brings them into conflict. Chase championships or have work/life balance? Hold people accountable or have fun? Keep improving or enjoy your successes? It's all a false choice for coaches. The disciplined approach is to chase and produce excellence with 100% intensity. Unapologetically. And to recognize and protect what makes the pursuit worthwhile. Not the end result. Not the "why". The pursuit. The activity. Because fulfillment doesn't come from the achievement. It comes from the pursuit. Always. Excellence without fulfillment feels empty. You can win everything and feel nothing. Fulfillment without excellence is fine in life, but not in competitive arenas. You feel good but don't perform, don't compete, don't grow, and therefore won't be in that position for long. Pursuing fulfillment doesn't mean abandoning excellence or ambition. But don't expect ambition and production to fulfill your realest internal needs. It doesn't and it won't. You can try if you want. You may need to experience it yourself in order to discover this truth enough to trust it. External markers (wins, titles, production, etc) define your mission but not your purpose. Your purpose and what bring you personal fulfillment can never be capture by an external marker. It's an internal, personal sensation. Always has been, always will be. For everyone. Let the work, the coaching experience, the relationships, the worthy struggle, the problem solving, and the process of getting better feed your purpose and fulfillment. Totally separate from the excellence it produces. That's how purpose and mission align. The mission in sports is to win. That's the external excellence. The purpose is whatever you want it to be. That's the internal fulfillment. It's unique to each individual and different for everyone. When you do it with discipline, chasing excellence creates an absorption in actions and experiences that fulfill you. But even when you do it with the most elite discipline, excellence and fulfillment are rarely happening in the same moment. Because they're separate pursuits that only occasionally merge into a shared experience. Always temporary. Always lasts shorter than you think. That's life. That's leadership. That's sports. That's why we do it.

Dusty May on how his ambition has evolved and how becoming a dad led him to redefine success. "I was probably 25 and I was incredibly ambitious and and I was trying to get to the top quickly. And then once Ann and I started having children, my entire perspective changed. I simply wanted to enjoy who I worked with, enjoy who I coached, and try to be the absolute best coach I could be." The longer I work with coaches, the more I realize that the most fulfilled ones aren't always the ones with the premier titles or the highest paid. They're the ones who have clarity about why they coach in the first place. Ambition isn't just chasing bigger jobs or dream destinations. Real ambition is chasing a better version of yourself. You don't have to choose between being ambitious and being fulfilled. The goal is to chase excellence while protecting the people and priorities that make the pursuit worthwhile in the first place. 📹: Dallas Mavericks

Comfort has ended more championship seasons than hard work ever will. Comfort tells you to skip the last rep. Comfort tells you today’s good enough. Comfort tells you you’ve already earned it. Meanwhile, your opponent is hoping you listen. Championship teams don’t chase comfort. They chase the standard. @RhodyFootball

#AI can be a valuable tool and, at the same time, it calls for a measured and vigilant approach. The speed and simplicity with which practical assistance can be accessed undoubtedly makes life easier. Yet they can also encourage excessive reliance and the search for ready-made answers, and weaken personal creativity and judgment. #MagnificaHumanitas

Artificial intelligences do not undergo experiences, do not possess a body, do not feel joy or pain, do not mature through relationships, and do not know from within what love, work, friendship or responsibility mean. Nor do they have a moral conscience, since they do not judge good and evil, grasp the ultimate meaning of situations, or bear responsibility for consequences. They may imitate or even simulate, but they do not understand what they produce, for they lack the affective, relational, and spiritual perspective through which human beings grow in wisdom. #MagnificaHumanitas
