This Supreme Court just gutted the Voting Rights Act, opening the door to more racial gerrymandering. This is unacceptable, and Congress must act to protect it.  If the Court won’t protect one of our most fundamental rights, we need a new Voting Rights Act strong enough to stop politicians from picking their voters and silencing communities of color.

Happy International Workers’ Day. Texas workers are the backbone of our economy — the folks building our roads, teaching our kids, stocking our shelves, and keeping our communities moving. They deserve more than our thanks. They deserve fair wages, safe working conditions, strong unions, and leaders who will fight like hell for them.

ICE detained three Texas kids — ages 12, 14, and 18 — at a routine check-in. They were here legally, with an open asylum case. They did everything right. Ending this shutdown is a small step and one that should have happened weeks ago for the Coast Guard members, TSA officers, and FEMA workers left without pay while Republicans played politics with their livelihoods. This ruling makes clear that electing a proven leader with the experience and national profile to force through new voting rights legislation is more critical than ever. As a voting rights lawyer and Congressman who helped draft and pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, I have spent my career fighting against exactly this kind of disenfranchisement. As someone with deep roots in the Rio Grande Valley, I know our border communities personally — and I know that what's happening right now isn't keeping anyone safer. Children aren't showing up to school because their families are too scared. Businesses have lost their workers. Communities feel the Texas they love slipping away.  This is a policy failure, and Texans deserve real solutions, not cruelty designed to generate fear within our neighborhoods.

Spent the afternoon with my friend @VelezforTexas learning how to weld and getting hands-on experience in one of the skilled trades that keep our state running. Raised by a single mom who was a public school teacher, I know what it means to work hard, stretch every dollar, and lean on your community. Working people will always have a fighter in their corner with me.
