A behind the scenes look at the craziness of NCAA recruiting in running, and how 3rd party companies are making lots of $$$ to get desperate east africans to the US.
It's a mess all around.

Why is this such an issue?
Because NCAA XC/track is hurting right now. Especially on the men's side, roster slots are getting cut drastically.
So the incentive is to bring in a 28 year old professional, instead of taking the time to develop an 18 year old kid...
It becomes win at all costs, instead of what the NCAA has traditionally been about...developing college aid kids, extending careers from HS for 4-5 more years.
We don't have a club system in the US, largely because the NCAA covered that gap of what to do with kids post HS.
When men's roster spots are cut to 9 or 7 people on an entire XC team, then development goes out the window. You don't have a year or two to wait for a kid to progress. So you go out and get your 25yr old pro or semi-pro athlete...
And the end result is fewer spots for HS age kids, fewer opportunities, less development.
Add in the fact that you're now dealing incentivizing doping in systems with very lax anti-doping, and it's a recipe for disaster. As we've seen in the last year or two, with multiple NCAA athletes competing while banned...
It's just not a good look all around.
And the ultimate end result will be college track and XC will continue to disappear.
We need NCAA coaches to stop thinking short term and about only their program...and instead pop their head above water and see that their sport is dying if they don't make some adjustments to show why the sport is valuable besides "We won X conference."
