@scifri Just as I come back to X, sorry to hear this. Where are you now going?

Science Friday is no longer posting on X.
We didn’t make this decision lightly. We had many wonderful years on X/Twitter and have enjoyed thoughtful audience conversations, banter, and questions in this space. Thank you for supporting SciFri over the years—your curiosity fuels everything we do. We hope to see you in other spaces.

@Astro_Jessica Very cool! What's the reason for the reds further out and the greens closer in? Different gasses in the atmosphere getting excited?

On my first mission I completely fell in love with space photography - tough not to when you’re graced with this kind of unique perspective of viewing all that Earth has to behold from above. I’ve been so happy to bust out the array of impressive lenses that we have up here once again, and this time with even better cameras (Nikon Z9, vs the D5 from my previous mission).
I was lucky enough to capture some pretty good aurora (northern lights, here over Alaska and Canada) on my first timelapse attempt of the mission, stay tuned for more!
Hoping for some impressive solar events to put on a fascinating show like the ones a few months ago.

Gave Ss a quiz on periodic trends and most did poorly. I asked them to take notes during my mini lectures and read and take notes from the online text, but now I'm assuming they did neither. #iteachchem

@ihaveabug I have tried to tell my students this for years, but the system of schooling and college admissions teaches them otherwise. So frustrating.

@everettis1 After using an inquiry based storyline science curriculum for the past 2.5 years, I find the need to return to more DI for content purposes.

What is wrong with direct instruction?
Not lecturing for 60 - 90 minutes, actual direct instruction used appropriately?

@NicholasFerroni I've done this math before with my students when I feel like I'm having to babysit them, except I use $10 an hour, I'd still be stinking rich at that rate. 💲

My 2nd and 4th grader decided to work on fraction problems over spring break, thank you kids! #math

@hankgreen I often dream what it would be like to live in a walkable/bike city, you know like the cities they have in old movies. 🚶♂️🚲

The "electric cars are not it, trains are the way" crowd is great...I love it.
But I also see a smattering of "Fuck Joe Biden" in it. Like, "Why is the president pushing for electric cars and not trains?!?!" and, I dunno, y'all. Have you considered the 100 trillion dollars of car-necessary infrastructure we have built in the US? We built the ideology into every dollar we spent for the last 100 years. It's built into the landscape, it's built into people's brains.
"You shouldn't have a car" is a good position to have if you want to get in fights on Twitter with the 90% of American adults who cannot imagine life without a car. That's not their fault, we built the cities this way, and they aren't going to get unbuilt.
We need to get off fossil fuels /now/. If your first step is "we must convince America to abandon suburbs... through force if necessary" the outcomes will be worse.

@MarcusLuther6 Couldn't agree more. Some days a 1/3 of my students are absent due to all the reasons and then my present students expect a "free" or work day. Nope, I'm moving on with my lesson.

@MrDanielBuck I'm considering asking my district for chemistry textbooks and an actual curriculum, I've been making it up for years. I'm curious if students will read them when asked. Their reading comprehension of science text is quite low.
