What often appears as ideological extremism in Iranian diaspora politics may be better understood as the psychological afterlife of revolution, prolonged exile, and decades of political powerlessness. Drawing on insights from clinical psychology and political theory, in this article, I explore how unresolved collective trauma and displacement shape political behavior in exile. In the absence of institutions capable of mediating trust, conflict, or collective mourning, anger circulates horizontally within communities and moral absolutism begins to substitute for political efficacy. My article examines how exile politics can sometimes reproduce the very authoritarian dynamics they seek to oppose. The argument is particularly relevant in the aftermath of the recent uprisings—widely considered the most violent protests in Iran since the revolution—which renewed global attention on the country while also exposing deep fractures within diaspora political discourse.
