Got milk? Bitget Wallet DEX has officially integrated @CoWSwap 🐮🩵 With our own dedicated CoW Protocol Solver, trades are passed through deep liquidity networks for the best price execution. Better fills = better trades.

Most people think platforms like @Wise give the best rates when swapping large amounts of dollars to euros. But that’s not always true. This quick side-by-side shows what actually happens when you compare Wise to swapping USDC to $EURe on @CoWSwap . Not only do you get more euros onchain, you get them instantly, straight to your wallet, without any friction!

After the trading incident on March 12, our team has examined the circumstances that lead to the event in block 24643151. Below is an in-depth analysis of what happened, and what we're doing to ensure incidents like this don't happen in the future.

@zacodil It is fair criticism to say that some of the more complex order types need better solver coverage. We work on this near-constantly.

You had a framework for tracking solver behavior. Instead of expanding it to cover quality - not just liveness - you deleted it. Then you say "it wouldn't have helped." Of course it wouldn't. You removed it instead of improving it. Your security model is solver competition. But complex orders - flash-loan swaps, hooks, EIP-1271 signing - attract fewer solvers. The orders that need the most protection get the least competition. Is that by design?

Six weeks before a trader lost $50M in a single swap, CoW Protocol deleted the only system that could have caught it. CoW works like an auction. When you swap tokens, "solvers" compete to find you the best price. The idea is simple - competition protects the user. But what happens when only one solver shows up? Nothing protects you. That's exactly what happened on March 12. One solver took a $50M order and routed it through a tiny pool with $30K of liquidity. The user got back $36K worth of tokens instead of ~$50M. Here's the thing. CoW had a safety system for this. It was called SolverParticipationGuard - a module that tracked solver behavior and could block bad actors. 1,500+ lines of code. They never turned it on. It sat in "log-only" mode for months. And on January 30, instead of fixing it, they deleted it. The commit was tagged [TRIVIAL]. From their own PR description: "Given the lack of demand for this functionality, it doesn't make sense to keep it." Six weeks later, a solver did exactly what this system was designed to prevent - routed a massive order through a pool with no liquidity, with no one to stop it. No competition, no oversight, no guard. This wasn't a hack. Nobody broke in. The door was removed from the inside and labeled as spring cleaning.

@CoWSwap Rather than simply check a box, anything over 90% slippage should require a user to type “I willingly accept I am about to lose all of my funds”

Statement from CoW Protocol: Earlier today, a trader attempted to swap 50M aEthUSDT for aEthAAVE through Aave's swap interface, which is powered by CoW Protocol. Despite clear warnings that showed the user they would lose nearly all of the value of their transaction, and despite needing to explicitly opt into the trade after seeing the warning, the user chose to proceed with their swap. It is important to point out that CoW Protocol is a DEX aggregator that routes transactions through nearly every major public and private liquidity source. No DEX, DEX aggregator, public liquidity pool, or private liquidity pool (or combination thereof) would have been able to fill this trade at anywhere near a reasonable price. Preventing users from making trades removes choice and can lead to terrible outcomes in some situations (e.g. a market crash). That said, trades like these show that DeFi UX still isn’t where it needs to be to protect all users. As a team, we are now reviewing how we balance strong safeguards with preserving user autonomy. It goes without saying that we will also refund any fees sent to CoW DAO as a result of this transaction. We will keep the community posted as new information comes to light.
CoW DAO@CoWSwap

Hey everyone — we’re aware of the large swap transaction circulating on X. Based on what we’ve seen so far, there’s no indication of a protocol exploit or otherwise malicious behavior. The transaction executed according to the parameters of the signed order. Our interface shows clear price impact warnings for swaps of this magnitude, as does Aave’s. We’re continuing to review the details and will share updates as we learn more.

@unfinished_kek Yes. The best quote you are seeing there gives you less than $9M worth of AAVE for $50M worth of USDT. We are investigating why our solvers returned much less than this, but losing 80% of the value of the trade was a best case scenario here.

@CoWSwap "No DEX, DEX aggregator, public liquidity pool, or private liquidity pool (or combination thereof) would have been able to fill this trade at anywhere near a reasonable price." is this true? if the swap was routed via multiple pools instead of just one? x.com/unfinished_kek…
unfinished@unfinished_kek

you can verify the quotes you would get for swapping $50M AAVE tokens on Ethereum. But what's funny here is: why would @CoWSwap provide such inferior quotes compared to other aggregators? The only explanation is the incompetence of their solvers?
