Speaking of affordability, remember that time in 2026 when my assessment/taxes went up $800/month, health insurance for a family of three was $500/pay check, daycare was $20k for September to June, baby formula was $55 a container and gas was who knows because it hurts to look 😭

@dianesavino You read my mind. I was trying all night to find any way to help with the cost and came up empty. Some utility companies (not mine) offer rebates but no state or federal programs that would work for me unfortunately. :(

@DanClarkReports This shows a flaw in the NYSERDA grant program that could have helped with the cost. You have to go to them 1st, get a contractor etc. It doesn't recognize the emergency of the situation.

My husband called me today to tell me we had no heat.
I'm now $16,000 poorer because I have to buy a new (gas) furnace. My house apparently isn't suited for a heat pump so I'm installing a high-efficiency unit.
There is, genuinely, no winning.

So there was quite a bit of interest in this tweet about my energy bill yesterday, with many claims about what's causing it to spike. It was primarily gas. We actually used less electricity. We bought this house in September and it has gas heating (but an electric stove.)

@PeteSikora1 He didn't dismiss a heat pump outright. But it wasn't an option for us financially. The new furnace will be about $880/mo. for 18 months if we don't want to pay interest. The heat pump would've been hundreds more and required thousands in duct work. We just couldn't afford it.

Unless this reporter’s home is unusual, this is a typical situation where another home is locked to gas for another 20 years: it breaks, and the contractor says the only option is a new furnace, and dismisses heat pumps, which cost more upfront. Policy needed to stop this cycle!
