The Primer Fellowship is back. If you've dreamed of launching your own school in FL, AL, TX or AZ — we built this for you. We're on a quest to ensure this is the last generation left behind by the US K-12 system, and we need your help. Let's launch some schools!

Private schools are the most expensive placebo in America. Nowhere else will you pay $250k+ for something that has so little impact on school achievement. My latest on why private school isn't worth the cost: ofdollarsanddata.com/why-private-sc…

Good private schools here cost $700K per child from kindergarten through high school. With 3 kids, that’s $2.1M. For a diploma. Just give each kid $700K at 18. That’s a house, a business, or a fully funded retirement account. No chance these schools beat that kind of head start.

Why did the # of disabled students in Texas climb 10.5% in a single year? What could possibly explain this?

@delk This is a huge pain point for microschool founders too. We've heard from dozens who get stuck in local zoning maze for months. LLMs + proper workflow automation could be transformative for accelerating new school openings.

I spend a shocking amount of time thinking about land use, zoning, and building code for new Primers. There's an enormous opportunity to compress multi-month local muni processes into hours with LLM's. If you're building this, I'd love to invest and connect you with cities & counties who need you. (Related: unlocking progress in the physical world is a wonderful mission — we need many more founders attacking such problems!)

@RealBPhil We have plenty of data to share with them of 100's of low-and-middle-income San Antonio families attending great private schools for free next year :)

Update: The SA New Express originally falsely reported that three-quarters of TEFA applicants were currently in private school based on misleading data from a disreputable organization. We explained why that was wrong. The data included over 50,000 applicants who were not enrolled in any school in the ‘24-25 school year, but were wrongly assumed to go to private school because they “did not go to public school.“ The SA News Express has updated their story. In attempt to save face, they are excluding tens of thousands of applicants in their analysis by limiting it to “school age children” so they can still get a big number (71%). But if you include all applicants, the data shows that less than 50% went to a private or homeschool in ‘24-25.

Nearly three in four applicants to Texas’ new voucher program are likely already enrolled in private or home school, new data shows. bit.ly/3P0qgwr

Without credit card rewards, America's airlines would not be profitable. Excluding flights, drinks, amenities, upgrades, etc. paid for by points, all the major airlines are running at a loss.

There’s a huge opportunity to build Trade School 2.0. Here’s my thinking: Both education and employment are in the middle of a tectonic shift. AI and other new technologies are reshaping those landscapes rapidly. The traditional college system is fracturing. How do you convince someone to spend $200k+ on a degree when entry-level knowledge economy jobs feel increasingly uncertain? Meanwhile, the unsexy is becoming sexy. Plumbers. Electricians. HVAC technicians. Home services. Energy. Manufacturing. People who work with their hands and need to understand people. Trade School 2.0 embraces technology as leverage in both training and business building in service-oriented sectors. It could also serve the massive reskilling wave that's coming. Training people for "trades" we can't even envision today What am I missing? Who’s building this?

We're testing something new: I'm connecting ambitious Primer students with real-world businesses to shadow, learn, and (eventually) intern / apprentice. If you're in manufacturing, trades, logistics, auto, services, etc. in FL, TX, AL, or AZ — let's chat. r@primer.com

NYC's proposed K-12 education budget translates to $42,000/student — which is ~90th percentile private school tuition in the US.
