But in our reality... The same Court that required Alabama to draw a majority-Black district two years ago allowed the state to eliminate it this year. The seat Shomari Figures won in 2024 is now back on the ballot August 11 — on a map drawn to take it from him.

In that universe... There's no Aug. 11 replacement primary running on a new map. There’s no AL-1 frontrunner abandoning his race midstream to chase a now-winnable, majority-white AL-2.

NEW: A federal judge panel sounded skeptical of the Justice Dept's request for access to California and Oregon’s voter rolls. This appears yet another roadblock for DOJ's unprecedented efforts to obtain sensitive voter registration data from every state. democracydocket.com/news-alerts/co…

NEW: In 1982, Congress thought that changing the Voting Rights Act was enough to beat the South’s disenfranchisement of Black voters — it wasn’t. But it holds the power to pass a new VRA and strip the justices of any power over it, Billy Corriher writes.

Before polls even close, the Georgia GOP calls the primary "tainted," with zero evidence. Same playbook every cycle. 🥱 Do you guys ever get tired?
GAGOP@GaRepublicans

Statement from Georgia Republican Party Chairman @JoshMcKoon : “We strongly condemn the court’s reversal of its decision to grant access to bipartisan observers in the Election Night Reporting Room. The initial Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) was a necessary and proper step to uphold Georgia law and restore basic transparency to the process of aggregating and reporting statewide election results. Granting observers the ability to watch every facet of that critical function was the right call. Reversing that order and denying access has inflicted serious damage. First the court opened the door to accountability—only to slam it shut. That flip-flop undermines public confidence not only in this specific judicial process but in the integrity of the entire election night reporting system. Whatever the final outcome of this primary, it will be tainted by the refusal to allow bipartisan observers to watch all stages of the process. Voters deserve to see how their votes are received, verified, aggregated, and reported—not a closed-door operation shielded from scrutiny. We call on the court to immediately reinstate access for State Election Board members and poll watchers. Transparency is not negotiable. The people of Georgia expect and are entitled to nothing less.”
