@PamelaSnow2 Yes, this is why in Reading Recovery writing is a daily activity & Ts learn that letter learning is more than just linking letters to sound. Always fascinating to see those who bash RR promote the very practices that RR used to help children on their path to becoming literate.

You know it from memory, use knowledge of the writing system, use analogy, and “use initial letter plus context clues.. to anticipate what the word might be.” She goes on about orthographic mapping.
