Lack of hope more than joy I would say but even then hope falls on to your imagination. Same as anxiety, nervousness, fear. It’s all in your imagination and your brains probability factoring. Control the imagination, control the depression

The implication is that two emotions of opposite valence are inseparable— lose one lose both. But why should we believe that? Characteristic of a depressed person is an inability to experience joy. Is it then impossible for them to mourn the loss of joy? No, a depressed person feels all sorts of negative emotions. Why should a person who has lost the ability to experience love be unable to mourn the loss of that ability?
