Congratulations to the medical students on successfully completing their elective attachment and training at UCSI Hospital. This evening we had a brief gathering and handed over their completion certificates to each of them. It has been a pleasure hosting them in particular the three students from Oman and, even more importantly, nurturing their interest in medicine while instilling compassionate patient care. Their teamwork truly reflects our commitment to putting patients' health first. We hope they will succeed in their future endeavours and careers in due course.

This morning we had 3 cases for surgery. Interestingly, it was a regional operating list; one patient from Bangkok, another from Jakarta, and one local patient. I’m glad all three cases went well and reinforced the core principles of surgery: meticulous technique, bloodless dissection along the respective tissue planes, and, more importantly, precise hand‑eye coordination with an unwavering focus on patient safety, and operating with the heart. A special thanks to the incredible team; anaesthetist Dr. Peggy Cheang and our entire OT staff at UCSI Hospital, for their seamless dedication and support.

The opening of the IJN Hospital in Sabah will help reduce the financial burden on patients and their families, while speeding up access to specialist treatment. This is very important to ensure patients do not only receive treatment at a late stage, which can increase risks and treatment costs. This evening, I was invited to give a closing keynote address on the Future of Unified Healthcare and the salient lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic at the Impact Summit 2026 held at the Connexion Conference & Event Centre (Nexus), Bangsar South, Kuala Lumpur. I shared insights and my experience from the COVID-19 pandemic, stressing that "health security is national security." I advocated for a shift from siloed methods to a fully integrated “Whole of Government and Whole of Society Approach”. This necessitates collaboration across all sectors, public, private, and civil society. More importantly is to optimise to pool together expertise and resources effectively across sectors. The keynote address concluded by highlighting that public trust and the active contribution of every citizen are fundamental to national health security and sustainable development for a better future.

A strategic partnership has been formed to build an IJN (National Heart Institute) hospital in Likas, Sabah, on a 10-acre gazetted site. The Sabah Foundation Group and IJN signed two MoUs: one for the hospital's development via its subsidiary, Innoprise Corporation, and another for health education collaboration between UCSF and IJN University College. The project aims to provide world-class cardiovascular care locally, reducing the need for Sabah patients to travel to Kuala Lumpur, hence saving costs, reducing waiting times, and preventing late-stage treatment. While Sabah already has a heart centre at Queen Elizabeth II Hospital, the capacity is insufficient. The new hospital will form a comprehensive health ecosystem including training, research, and expertise transfer to local health workers. The initiative also supports health tourism and aligns with state and foundation commitments to modernise healthcare, create jobs, and improve well-being in Sabah. This is certainly the beginning of a new partnership benefiting the people of Sabah.

It was truly heartwarming to reconnect with close friends and familiar faces at Big Caring Group’s Raya Open House this afternoon, held at their corporate office in Bandar Bukit Raja, Klang, Selangor. Gathering together during this festive season gave us a wonderful chance to look back fondly on shared memories and catch up on each other’s latest milestones. These moments of reminiscing and honest conversation only deepened our bonds of friendship. More importantly, BCG awarded 15 Umrah sponsorships to their staff this year as we celebrate the spirit of Raya in the month of Shawwal. I wish everyone continued blessings with good health, inner peace, and lasting prosperity.

Drawing on more than 50 years of industry expertise, Malaysia ranks as the world’s sixth-largest semiconductor exporter. Its well-established reputation for supply chain reliability continues to attract substantial investment from both Western and Chinese firms. With many companies anticipating revenue growth of 25% beyond 2026, the sector is poised for strong expansion. In Kuching, our second meeting was with Datuk Amar Haji Awang Tengah bin Ali Hasan, Deputy Premier and Second Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development, as well as Minister for International Trade and Industry of Sarawak. We explored new opportunities and collaboration in the semiconductor industry. This morning we met with Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian at Wisma Bapa Malaysia to exchange views and discuss the investment and development of the semiconductor industry. In Sarawak Integrated Longhouse Silicon Valley, the semiconductor industry plays a key role in driving technological advancement. Through strategic investments, strong partnerships, and a skilled workforce, the region aims to build a sustainable global market over time. InvestSarawak remains dedicated to supporting economic growth and development by offering comprehensive services tailored to the evolving needs of the global marketplace.

It was a genuine pleasure to catch up with my schoolmate Jaffri Ibrahim, CEO of CREST, while en route to Kuching, Sarawak. We have a significant mission ahead and a major milestone to achieve tomorrow.

This morning I shared a truly heartwarming moment with my former patient, who underwent thyroid surgery more than twenty years ago. Now, she’s not here for herself, but to support her daughter, who had a total thyroidectomy just yesterday at UCSI Hospital. The daughter is recovering well and is expected to be discharged tomorrow. Seeing this familiar face from decades past, now in the role of a loving, caring mother, brought back a flood of memories. We exchanged warm smiles and caught up briefly, her gratitude for the care she received all those years ago still fresh, even as she now channels that experience into comforting her daughter. It was a profound reminder of how the bonds of healing can ripple across generations, turning a hospital corridor into a place of reunion and appreciation.

Another challenging case of large right retrosternal goiter was successfully removed this morning at UCSI Hospital. This case was referred to us from another private hospital. The procedure was uneventful, and fortunately I was assisted by my fellow Dr. Alif and our capable anaesthetist Dato Dr. Satber. The highlight was the team's exceptional attention to detail and dedication to a safe outcome. Each day is a new experience filled with the potential to make a difference and save lives.
